Audre Lord gives us her opinion on people and their differences and the effects that it has on our interactions with them in http://carmichaeldigitalprojects.org/politicsofinfo/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Lorde-Reading.pdf.

College campus’s even have ways to talk about diversity. Check out the clubs at your local school http://www.montevallo.edu/campus-life/um-life/diversity/.

Some people react differently to racism watch how this business reacted. http://youtu.be/SOAbA4E88iY

Ears Pressed to the Floor

As far back as I can remember I have always been nosy. I just always liked being “in the know” about everything that is going on. The first time that I can remember searching for information was around first grade. My younger brother and I were playing outside and walked in through the front door just in time to hear what sounded like a very exciting conversation going on between my parents. We walked into the kitchen to see what they were talking about. The second that we walked up, they went quiet. “What’s going on?”, I asked them. They replied, “Oh, nothing.”, while wearing a smirk that instantly lets on that that was not the truth. It instantly became my mission to find out what information they were discussing before they realized my brother and I were there. We walked away, only to hear them begin talking again as soon as they thought we were out of earshot. We ran to my room and to the air vents that were on the floors of every room in our house. They worked like a telephone, connecting all the rooms. We sat with our ears pressed to the floor trying to decipher the muffled voices of our parents. Thirty minutes and a stiff neck later, we found out they had decided to let us get a puppy and we were going to pick one out later that day! Now I still crave information as much as I did then, I just go about getting it in a smarter way.m

Girls Will be Girls

passing-notes

My search for information all started the moment I saw him, “the love of my life”. I was just a short chubby little sixth grader and he was the most beautiful creature I had ever laid my eyes on. My first thought, ” What is his name? His number? Does he think I’m cute?” This is when the planning started. How would I find out all of this very useful information. I called in all of the reinforcements: Kaitlyn, Lauren, Megan, and Summer. Our plan, not to talk him like normal human beings, but to follow him around and drop “subtle” hints. Then the magic idea of the note came. We were all hanging out in my room one day when the perfect song came on, “Check yes or no” by George Strait. Our first instinct to get some paper and write the words, ” Do you like me? Check yes or no?”  The next day at school I saw him, handed him the note, and ran away. After waiting the horrible and cruel hour in between class periods, I finally got the information I needed and wanted so badly. As I opened the note my heart sank as I read the word, “yes”. The first time I ever realized I wanted information may not seem that important, but to my sixth grade heart it was the best piece of information I could have ever received.

Who to Believe

UM

Where My Journey Began

Throughout most of my public education experience, I almost always took for granted that information presented by adults is entirely accurate and universally accepted. Of course, I was warned by mother to never fully trust advertisements or strangers; however, if a teacher, family member, or other respected adult presented me with information they were not to be questioned. Interestingly enough, I subconsciously obeyed my mother in this respect for years to come. I always absorbed everything I learned in school and from other adults and never questioned what seemed to me like objective data. In fact, this mental habit stuck with me until my world history civilizations class my freshman year of college. Continue reading

As Seen on TV

blopensI must have watched too much television as a child. Everything I wanted (to eat, to play with, to watch, to read), I saw during the commercial breaks on Nickelodeon and Disney Channel. I followed my parents around the grocery store asking for Lucky Charms, because “they’re magically delicious,” and begged for a ZooBooks Subscription. Textbook for the Politics of Information Available

There’s only one textbook for  HON 308-003 The Politics of Information, and it’s free. That’s right. When you head down to the University of Montevallo bookstore on Main Street, all you need to do is show the cashier your schedule and you can get your copy of Authorize This!  You will need to read this text and bring it to class when we meet this coming Wednesday.

Authorize ThisOn our first day, we’ll be introducing the class, talking about our own conceptions of information, and thinking about the relationship between information, education and bookstores on college campuses. You’ll want to read Kevin Carey’s article on the college textbook industry and John L. Pulley’s article on colleges that outsource bookstore services. You might also want to take a look at a sample contract between Texas A & M University and Barnes & Noble Booksellers. Why do colleges outsource bookstore services? And what does it mean when a professor requires a text for a class? Who benefits, and why? Continue reading
