There’s only one textbook for HON 308-003 The Politics of Information, and it’s free. That’s right. When you head down to the University of Montevallo bookstore on Main Street, all you need to do is show the cashier your schedule and you can get your copy of Authorize This! You will need to read this text and bring it to class when we meet this coming Wednesday.
On our first day, we’ll be introducing the class, talking about our own conceptions of information, and thinking about the relationship between information, education and bookstores on college campuses. You’ll want to read Kevin Carey’s article on the college textbook industry and John L. Pulley’s article on colleges that outsource bookstore services. You might also want to take a look at a sample contract between Texas A & M University and Barnes & Noble Booksellers. Why do colleges outsource bookstore services? And what does it mean when a professor requires a text for a class? Who benefits, and why?
Again, do pick up your required text at the bookstore, but you can also take a look at the digital version here. We’ll see you on Wednesday.
