Description
This letter states that the season for taking squirrels closed on February 1st and it would not begin again until the following fall. The letter was written by I. T. Quinn commissioner of the Alabama State Department of Game and Fisheries in Montgomery. The reason for the letter was that he had been getting reports of students and professors trapping squirrels right outside of Montevallo's city limits in order to bring them back to campus.
The residents of Alabama College wanted the squirrels on campus because they were tired of so many acorns on the red bricks. The bricks were already hard enough to walk on. The students and professors' efforts were successful as Alabama College had a healthy population by the 1940s. Current students can certainly attest to the fact that the campus features an abundant population of squirrels.
