Description

In the December 1899, University of Montevallo (then called Alabama Girls Industrial School) President Francis Peterson received a letter from the Ahrens and Ott manufacturing company. This company sent a brochure to Peterson of the items that they sold. Toilets.

Ahrens and Ott began back in 1865 as a plumbing and pipe fitting company. The company merged with Dawes and Myler Manufacturing Company and seven others in 1899 and became the Standard Sanitary Manufacturing Company.

In the brochure, toilets ranged from prices in the low $20s to high $80s. Two of which were priced at $42 and $39. These prices by today’s standards would be $1176.46 and $1092.43. Whether or not if President Peterson purchased these toilets is unknown.
