<text>Born October 20, 1937, William Cobb is a novelist, playwright, and professor emeritus at the University of Montevallo. He taught Southern literature at Montevallo starting in the fall of 1963, when the school was Alabama College, remaining on campus until his retirement in 2000, which included 13 years as “writer-in-residence”.
Cobb received his undergraduate degree from the University of West Alabama, then Livingston State College. His master’s in creative writing from Vanderbilt University in Nashville. While at Montevallo he defined himself as someone who “wasn’t a scholar, but whatever they needed teaching, I was willing to do it. I loved literature and I loved teaching.” In 1965 he married Loretta Douglas, now Loretta Cobb, and together they have one child. Cobb struggled with alcoholism for 20 years after his marriage, and was largely unsuccessful in publication attempts for his short stories and novels, eventually entering into a rehabilitation program and becoming sober in the early 1980s. Later in this decade he would see three of his plays produced in New York City.
While employed by the University of Montevallo, Cobb published six novels, a collection of short stories, and several plays. Much of his work focuses on racial strife, and is marked by its dark comedy, and Southern gothic qualities. His first novel, published in 1984, was Coming of Age at the Y. His most acclaimed novel, A Walk Through Fire, came in 1992, and explores racial tensions in the American South. Cobb has earned a number of awards for his short stories, including two Hackney Literary Awards from Birmingham-Southern College, a recognition for best fiction in 1984 from the Sucarnochee Review, and the Alabama Writer’s Forum’s Harper Lee award in 2007.

<text>A native of Prattville, Alabama, Dr. Eva Olivia Golson was one of three children. She received her A.B. from Huntington College in 1923, then the Woman’s College of Alabama. She was also the first woman to receive a PhD in English from the University of Chicago, and served as a professor at the University of Montevallo for 45 years. Her dissertation was titled “The Spelling System of the Glasgow Ms of The Canterbury Tales”. While at Montevallo, she helped spearhead the Honor’s Program, which named the senior seminar after her once she retired. She was also the faculty member to second the motion made by Dr. Hallie Farmer on October 13, 1955 to make Alabama College coeducational, a move that ended the era of an all woman’s college and ushered it into a new existence. (Alabama College 1896-1969 Pg 119)
She is described by Norman McMillan, former chair of the English department, as having “a style all her own, and a splendid style to be sure” and that her writing was full of “quintessential Golsoniana—the wit, the warmth, the irony, the style.” (April 4, 1985) Dr. Golson had a passion for horticulture, often discussing the flowers in bloom on campus in her newsletters. She was responsible for weekly newsletters that she typed and edited, discussing campus culture, the comings and goings of English faculty, the flora of the campus, and other notable happenings. They serve as vignettes into Montevallo’s everyday past, allowing glimpses into the social and mechanical happenings of the department and campus.</text>

<text>The first interview of the semester was Satchel and I found out many different interesting things about. He came from Homewood High School which was an urban and public school in Jefferson County. He was a second-generation college student who wanted to go to the University of Montevallo to receive his education and to get a professional job. He came to Montevallo in the fall semester of 2016 taking general education classes and one political science class. His major was political science and was a student who lived on campus at Napier hall. Surprising he says he loves the dorm because there is always something going on every night in the dorms. He also said that he likes his roommate a lot and he thinks that he’s cool dude to hang out with.

Currently he works at the cafeteria on campus but he admits that he does not get no student discounts. He said that the food in the café is better than any high school’s cafeteria, but not better than any restaurants food. He admits that Einstein’s on campus sells some of the best food on campus. Right now, he is currently applying for the SGA of his sophomore class. He admitted that he was very prepared for Montevallo because he took AP classes in high school that got transferred to Montevallo. Lastly, he did tell me that his favorite restaurant in the city of Montevallo is the Tavern because it has great service, great food, and a great atmosphere where he feels comfortable at most.

<text>During my second interview process I interviewed Jeremy which has been a close friend at the University of Montevallo for two years. He started at Pinson Valley Highschool which was in Jefferson County public and rural area. He left there after the end of his tenth-grade year and then he attended Macadory High School. This school was public and rural in Jefferson County with an average class size of two-hundred students. He first went to Lawson State Community College in Birmingham to study music and he stayed in their only dorm that they had on campus which was a co-ed dorm. He started there in the fall semester of 2014 and said he loved it over there because it was a friendly environment for him. He then decided after a complete year of classes, he decided to transfer to the University of Montevallo to study for sociology. He is now a senior who is currently graduating this spring 2018 semester.

He currently stays in the Peck Hall dorms on campus and makes his way to class by driving to his classes since there at Umom. He currently has an Academic Scholarship and student loans that he uses to come to college. He said he doesn’t love the dorms, but he is now making use of his room that he shares to himself right now, but he plans on getting an apartment after graduation in the city of Montevallo. He currently works part time for the Bib County Sheriff’s Department which he has been doing for two years. He says that he hates the café and that he hasn’t eaten there since his freshman year. He also thinks Moe’s is the most expensive place on campus to eat at. His favorite restaurant inside the city of Montevallo is Taco Bell because it gives him safety, social contact, comfortable environment, good food, and great service when he pulls up to the drive through and makes his order. Lastly, his favorite hangout spot was the Eclipse Coffee and Books to hangout and socialize until they recently closed it down.

<text>During my third interview process, I interviewed my roommate Nicholas and this was the best interview I enjoyed so far. He is from the state of California and he attended Los Altos High School that was public and urban in Los Altos, California. His graduating class was an average of 500 people when he graduated in 2010. His mother influenced him to go to college and to transfer to somewhere in California. So first he chooses to go to Foot Hill Community College from 2011-2013 and theater arts was major of study. He was a second-generation college student because his mom went to college. He said he was surprised to this day to have Pell grants and student loans. His biggest influence was his mom because she wants him to get a degree and a great job in his near future. He then transferred to the University of Montevallo in the fall of 2015 with his major being theatre.

He said the café is generally negative and some days they are positive. He used to stay in Napier Hall dorms and he just got his apartment with me on December of 2017. He mentioned to me that he is involved on college night and its purple side rallies. As of now, he just transferred to the University of Colorado Boulder to take online classes to increase his GPA. His major is undecided right now, but possibly choosing it to sociology, anthropology, or theatre arts. He just made the change on January 2018 and their classes go by a time of quarter sessions instead of semesters. Nick mentioned that he also likes hanging out at the apartment or at his significant others place. Lastly, he really loves the Tavern on Mainstreet and he says he feels comfortable about me and him going out to hang around and eat different food meals there.

<text>This interview was about Northern who went to P.D. Jackson Olin High School in the west side of Birmingham area. It was a public city school system and it is in an urban environment. His graduation class was about 150 students and he was a first-generation college student which he mentions that he was influenced by the word of God to go to college to have a better life. He is also an assistant pastor for his main church in the Ensley area in Birmingham. He graduated from JO in 2010 and attended Lawson State Community College in the fall of 2013 studying his general courses. He then transferred to the University of Montevallo in the fall of 2017 as a junior class student and he currently commutes from his parents’ house in Birmingham.

He doesn’t participate in college night because he mentioned he goes straight to class and straight back home on a repeated daily basis. He also mentions that he doesn’t go out to no places around here except to the gas station to fill up gas after class and that’s it on his. He plans on going to get his master’s degree in business; however, he is currently taking classes for his undergrad BA of business. He did mention that café sucks and his high school food from the café is a lot more better than Montevallo’s café food. He says he usually brings his own lunch from the house rather if it’s something simple to make or if its leftover meals that he cooks. He says after all of this is over with his education he wants to have his own business which he is undecided on what to sell for his future shop, but he will figure it out over time.
