In 1949, The Alabamian published an article which referenced the pattern of movements of African Americans away from the South and up to other parts of the country. This is what historians today refer to as the Great Migration. This article was focused on education, and worry about proper allotment of resources to black schools. The article states that many people giving to education feared that if the South was granted Federal Aid for schools, minority groups still would not benefit. The Head of the Division of Administration and Finance in the State Dept of Education, Dr. C. P. Nelson, noted that there were less black students from ten years ago due to migration from the state. Also, he goes on to argue that education for black students has gotten better, with more buses and more certificate holders who are people of color.
