Around 250,000 men from Ireland joined the British forces over the course of World War I. Many stayed behind, however, to use the distraction the war caused the British to their home advantage, partly leading to the Easter Rising of 1916. While the Irish were fighting under the British flag, sending an army out to war was an important step for Irish identity. Up to this point, most, if not all, Irish fighting had been internal or against intruders and colonizers on Irish soil. Both the Ulster Division and the British 10th and 16th Divisions were eventually allowed to officially be named the Irish divisions after protesting from John Redmond, an Irish Nationalist. Later in 1918, however, as word spread that the British may use conscription in Ireland to bulk up their forces, Irish opposition towards British rule grew exponentially stronger. This cartoon is meant to show the different approaches England used in dealing with Ireland's Potato Famine. Robert Peel who had been Prime Minister up until 1846 as the famine was beginning had a Plantation Scheme approach that is to not do much of anything and allow the Irish to slowly be extinguished by the famine then allow Englishmen to settle there and therefore get rid of the Celts once and for all. On the other hand the next Prime Minister Lord John Russell had the Rate in Aid approach which was basically having Ireland pay a tax before England would send them any aid. Both of these plans angered and agitated the poor destitute Irish. The English saw the Irish as unwilling to accept aid, but in actuality England was unwilling to provide real aid. Everything they provided had too many strings attached. It is located at The Square, Bantry, West Cork, Ireland. It is a dedication to the man; many consider the founder of Irish Republican nationalism. Wolf Tone was on the French Armada that failed to land in 1796, but made his landing back into Ireland at Donegal in the Irish rebellion of 1798. Once he landed he was captured by British soldiers and was ordered to be executed by hanging. Instead of the British to get this type of punishment Theobald Wolfe Tone attempted to slash his throat and died 4 days later. Many questions remain, since Theobald Wolfe Tone was an officer in the French Navy why did the British have a right to try to execute him on grounds of being a traitor to the British Empire, instead of an enemy of a foreign government. These questions and doubts still linger in Ireland today, and will probably be never answered with certain. Thomas Fitzgerald was the 10th Earl of Kildare who stood against Henry VIII after hearing false rumors of his fathers execution in England. Fitzgerald gathered many men and tried unsuccessfully to take control of Dublin. Fitzgerald's army was defeated again at his castle in Maynooth. After running out of options, Fitzgerald sued for a pardon to save himself. He took a ship to England where he was arrested and put to death for treason. The journal covers events from Silken Thomas' advancement to his father's lordship to his hanging in England in 1537. It was known as one of the bloodiest areas of the Irish rebellion of 1798. It suffered greatly in terms of lives lost and property destroyed. Wicklow was many times the key to success or failure for both the Irish and Great Britain in the 1798 Irish Rebellion. Wicklow men fought from the very first hostilities on May 23, 1798 to the end of hostilities around November of the same year. Wicklow and its citizens were the most ardent supporters of the Irish Rebellion as it also held one of the largest loyalist communities in Ireland. This in itself meant that a large amount of the population was at odds with itself. This is proven by the fact that Wicklow sustained the second highest amount of damage to homes and other forms of property in all of Ireland during the Irish rebellion of 1798. The image on the right is a scan of the original publication of the letter in The Times. This is the first of the 'Queen's Letters' sent to the Archbishop of Canterbury in which she calls for a collection of aid for the Irish (and Scots) who are suffering from the famine. This letter was published in The Times and to be read aloud in all Anglican churches. The Queen’s first letter was very successful, raising £170,571 for Irish relief. Victoria's second letter will not even raise half the amount of her first. This is significant because it shows public attitudes shifting from being somewhat willing to contribute financially to unwilling to give financially for the purpose of aid to the Irish.
