It was unveiled by the President of Ireland at the time Mary Robinson. Although there are several monuments and memorials dedicated to the victims of the Great Hunger this memorial depicts the infamous 'Coffin Ships' that transported the poor Irish victims of the famine to America and Canada. The Irish in this bronze sculpture are depicted all around the ships as dead souls. The artist chose to depict them in this manner because the Irish had a very high chance of death aboard these ships to make it to a new life without starvation in America or Canada. Sadly many Irish had to make the hard choice of 'Stay in Ireland and die' or 'take the ship and probably die', the life of the Irish was very bleak during this era. This memorial is at the Croagh Patrick in Murrisk, county Mayo in Ireland, it is one of the more haunting memorials dedicated to the famine. The image on the right is a scan of the original publication of the letter in The Times. This is the first of the 'Queen's Letters' sent to the Archbishop of Canterbury in which she calls for a collection of aid for the Irish (and Scots) who are suffering from the famine. This letter was published in The Times and to be read aloud in all Anglican churches. The Queen’s first letter was very successful, raising £170,571 for Irish relief. Victoria's second letter will not even raise half the amount of her first. This is significant because it shows public attitudes shifting from being somewhat willing to contribute financially to unwilling to give financially for the purpose of aid to the Irish. Her and her family were evicted during the Irish Potato Famine. Her story is quite sad after her eviction she became quite sick and remained bedridden for over a week. At the end of her sickness she had a miscarriage. One of her children ends up dying "with wants and hunger." Her story is not unlike many other Irish. They did not have enough money to pay for rent and food, so out of necessity they would buy food so their family would not starve, however, they would not be able to pay rent and they would be evicted. Bridget's eviction happened in November when it would have been fairly chilly so that probably added to her hardships. Although there is not a lot of information about her or what happened to her, her story does give a sense of what kind of conditions the Irish were living in during the Great Hunger. This cartoon is meant to show the different approaches England used in dealing with Ireland's Potato Famine. Robert Peel who had been Prime Minister up until 1846 as the famine was beginning had a Plantation Scheme approach that is to not do much of anything and allow the Irish to slowly be extinguished by the famine then allow Englishmen to settle there and therefore get rid of the Celts once and for all. On the other hand the next Prime Minister Lord John Russell had the Rate in Aid approach which was basically having Ireland pay a tax before England would send them any aid. Both of these plans angered and agitated the poor destitute Irish. The English saw the Irish as unwilling to accept aid, but in actuality England was unwilling to provide real aid. Everything they provided had too many strings attached. Allen tried to escape the castle, but was run aground in Clontarf. He hid for a while in a friend’s estate, but was eventually found and put to death. Thomas Fitzgerald claimed that the death of Archbishop Allen was an accident for he had only told his men to take him away. His men apparently misunderstood his orders and immediately murdered him. The murder of Archbishop John Allen was a turning point in the rebellion of Silken Thomas. Many people of Ireland, being Catholic, did not like Fitzgerald’s brutality towards the cloth. One main reason Fitzgerald started losing support for his rebellion after the attack of Dublin Castle was the murder of Archbishop John Allen. Thomas Fitzgerald was the 10th Earl of Kildare who became head of the Kildare Dynasty after his father died in England. Thomas was appointed the head of the house when his father, Gerald, was summoned to England to answer for several charges against the king’s allies in Ireland. Gerald Thomas was held prisoner in the Tower of London where he eventually died of illness. News spread to Ireland, however, that Gerald Fitzgerald had been executed which enraged Thomas. He marched into the council at St. Mary's Abby in Dublin and denounced Henry VIII. He then gathered forces from many families that sympathized with his cause. Thomas Fitzgerald attacked Dublin Castle in July and was incredibly unsuccessful. After this defeat he lost many of his supporters who believed he was too weak to overthrow Henry VIII's rule in Ireland.
