Barnes received her M.A. at Columbia University and was a faculty member in the Art Department at the University of Montevallo for almost thirty years. The print depicts an explosion of white flowers on a blue background. The center flowers have yellow centers with white dots and the surrounding flowers have blue centers with white dots. The background is a darker shade of blue. The basket is situated underneath the flowers and almost blends into the varying shades of blue background. This print of Flowers in a Basket is 4/50 in the series and is matted, framed and signed by the artist. Barnes was a printmaker and painter in her profession of art. This print has many variations in color seen in different leaf shapes. The different colorations include red, green, yellow, and brown. The colors are meant to evoke seasonal change. The leaves were probably studied in the season of autumn. The wood-block print depicts all vertical leaf shapes that are organically developed. This work of art is horizontally oriented. There are 50 prints made of this particular piece. This specific print is the first in its edition.
