Description
This photo displays students of Alabama College, now known as The University of Montevallo, convened in front of Reynold’s Hall as it existed in 1920. From the very start of Alabama College, Reynolds Hall was affectionately known as The Chapel. Until Bloch Hall was constructed in 1915, The Chapel was the only building owned by Alabama College that was not used for housing. The girls went there for all their administrative needs, classes, and assemblies, including, of course, chapel.
In 1925 The Chapel was finally given the official name of Reynolds Hall in honor of Alabama College’s first president, Henry Reynolds. As well as being the school’s founder, Reynolds had another reported tie with the building. Reynolds supposedly took charge of the hall during the Civil War, giving a foothold for the ghost story students excitedly passed around, and still pass to this day, in mere whispers.
