<text>In the Fall term of 1921, the Alabama Technical Institute and College for women began offering a four year degree in home economics, the first of its kind in the state. Colleges all around ridiculed the institute because home economics was not on the state's listed curriculum. Soon enough, colleges and high schools began teaching the course to their students. Regarding term length, the institute adopted a four quarter system to allow girls to pursue an education even if they couldn't attend school for more than three or six months at a time. The girls attended class year round in 10-13 week terms. Twenty five years after the opening of the Alabama Technical Institute for College and Women, plans for a new library were submitted in light of President Palmer's urgent desire to cultivate education in Alabama. The library was open for use by September 1922. Also, the letter to the board of trustees outlines several expenses regarding the construction of the president's home. Beside's a report of the school's well being, as well as the well being of the student body, the letter outlines some changes being made to the dairy and farm used by the school. The price of milk was going up for the residents.

It is important to note that this document contains evidence of the institute's desire to grow from a small school into a college that would eventually offer a wide variety of courses as the Alabama College. So many students were coming from all over to attend the institute in the Fall 1921 term that the incoming freshman size was nearly double that of the entire school’s attendance the previous year. This was due to the institute’s new degree program in home economics. In 1922, all students at the college were also required to register for the new four-year degree or a three year degree in another course. The college also announces a new two-year program from students pursuing elementary and higher education to begin the follow year in 1923. These were among President Palmer’s first moves towards transitioning the Alabama Technical Institute and College for Women towards the four-year “Alabama College.”</text>

<text>On February 9, 1923 a committee gathered to divide funds set aside for the expansion of the Institute’s courses of study into a full fledged Bachelor’s program. Alabama College began session in the fall of 1923. In previous years the Institute had only offered courses of study ranging from one to three years, but those courses were expanding into higher fields of study. Beginning in 1923, all courses of study at the college were instructed on a four year basis according to the Bachelor’s program. Programs offered by the college included the B.A., B.S., and the Bachelor’s of Music. The Bachelor’s program carried general requirements for all students. Student’s courses would contain 192 quarter-credit hours, nearly 60 to 70 credit hours more than the average degree offered by the University of Montevallo, including 12 credit hours in physical education. Students were required to complete two years (four terms) of English, a requirement still in effect today for nearly all, if not every student in attendance today. One will notice that in most of Palmer’s correspondence with the Governor and the Board of Trustees, health is a very important issue and is maintained exceptionally well. Expansion of their music program into a Bachelor’s of Music degree reflects the college’s appreciation for fine arts besides their reputation for their programs for home economics and physical education. The letter outlines the goals of each of the college’s fully-loaded degree programs. At the time of this letter, Alabama was in high demand for teachers and greater literacy. The college began operating a teacher training program to raise the standard of education. Instructors from the Institute would go to Columbiana to train county school teachers who wished to teach higher & secondary education. Malaria and Tuberculosis in Alabama in the early 1910s caused demand for teachers with physical education and first-aid and limited medical training. Besides the college’s new four year Bachelor’s program, the college offered two-year degrees in home economics, music, business, and teaching for pupils who wished to teach elementary or junior high school education. This letter outlines several of the shifts made from the school’s infancy as the Alabama Technical Institute and College for Women to the Alabama College.</text>

              <text>A FAITHFUL HORSE

Old Proctor Passes Away at a Ripe Age

On Saturday, August 11th, 1917, this noted old horse, belonging to Dr. T. W. Palmer, passed away.
Every Citizen of Montevallo knew old Proctor, and there were many expressions of regret when it was learned that he was dead
"How long have you owned Proctor," asked the Advertiser man of Dr. Palmer.
"I Bought him September 1st, 1892, from a drove in Tuscaloosa. Has he lived three weeks longer he would have been in my possession just twenty-five years. He was supposed to be seven years old when I bought him ; so he was probably thirty-two years of age."
"Your family will probably miss him."
"Yes, he was truly a member of the family. When young he was one of the best saddle and buggy horses in the State. We often drove him twenty-five or thirty miles in one day, hitched to a surrey with four grown people in it, -sometimes with two adults and six or seven children. He has pulled the surrey, with four or five adults, to Calera in forty-five or fifty minutes, when the roads were worse than they are now. he was well known to thousands of young men and women over this country. During the past twelve months I have had inquiries concerning him from eight different states and from nearly every county in this State.
"A good and true story is told about him concerning the last appropriation to the A.G.T.I. Six years ago, when the appropriation bill was before the legislature, all such bills were postponed in the House until the last day when such matters could be taken up. Each member was allowed to call only one bill. The representative in charge of the A.G.T.I. measure has called up another bill and, therefore, could not bring up ours. Every other member, it seems, had a bill to bring up and would not give way for us. There was no opposition to our bill; we simply had to get a man who would agree to call it up. Eleven o'clock had come and midnight was fast approaching. The legislature would then adjoun, and our chance would be forever lost. You can imagine my desperation. Finally, a friend said to me, 'I think I know a man whom I can get to call your bill.' 'Get him at once,' said I. When that legislator's ear was gotten he could not recall me, at first, and did not want to call a bill unless he knew something of the people back of it. Explanations were quickly made by my friend that it was for the A.G.T.I., and that I had one lived in Tuscaloosa, etc, etc. Finally, the honorable representative said: 'O yes I recall him; I visited Tuscaloosa once to see my sick boy, and this fellow took me to ride behind old Proctor. I will call the bill up-not for Paler's sake- but for the sake of old Proctor.' Bloch hall and the new Music Building are the results of that act. Old Proctor was thus a genuine benefactor to the A.G.T.I., for the good impression that he made upon a stranger enabled us to procure, at the critical moment, the money used in the construction of two of our best buildings. Peace to the faithful old animal !"
It is creditable to Dr.Palmer that Proctor made such a good impression and lived to a good old age. It takes a kindly master to properly develop a valuable horse,</text>

<text>This short newspaper clipping humanizes President Palmer and shows us a softer side of the gargantuan figure who oversaw Montevallo for nearly two decades. This document, commemorating the death of Dr. Palmer's horse of twenty five years, Old Proctor, also allows for a short insight into the funding decisions of the Alabama Girl's Technical Institute, or A.G.T.I. during the early years of his administration. The short article goes into the small details of Old Proctor's life, including details of trips he had been a part of in the past. It also allows us to see President Palmer as more than just a figure of repute, and as a simple southerner like the majority of the graduates of Montevallo. Though the man would likely not agree wholly with the way in which our University has progressed, he set the foundations for a four year liberal arts institute, and without this work we would not be where we are today.</text>

ACETYLINE GAS
THE PERFECT LIGHT.
|No question is of more importance in every home than the subject of artificial illumination, which has been
one of the paramount interests Engaging men’s minds since the beginning of civilization. More light, better
light, and less expensive light, has been the problem to be solved. The discovery of a method to produce
acetylene gas in a manner making it a commercial and practical success is one of the latest achievements solving
the problem of economical and perfect light.
Acetylene, more recently and popularly termed Sunlight Gas, is by far the most perfect illuminant known, and because of its close resemblance to pure sunlight, it is believed that no better illuminating gas exists in
nature.
Made in Sizes from 6 to 3000 Lights
THE TRIUMPH GAS MACHINE
IS THE FIRST AND ONLY APPLIANCE TO MEET ALL PUBLIC REQUIREMENTS.
It represents the highest degree of mechanical perfection, simplicity, and efficiency. There are no working parts, valves, or intricate mechanism to get out of order, and it will give perfect satisfaction under all conditions. Beware of tin-can generators and water-seal arrangements, made by concerns with no reputation to sustain, and whose guarantees are worthless.
PATENTS. Our patents cover broadly the basic principles indispensable to safety, reliability, and simplicity, without which, it is believed, no lasting and successful acetylene gas generator can be made.

<text>In 1899, the President of the University of Montevallo (then called Alabama Girls Industrial School) Francis Peterson was given an advertisement for an Acetylene Gas Machine from the Craig Reynolds Foundry Company.

This “illumination machine” boasted multiple times that it used the best gas for lighting. Its use of Acetylene gas was to have the best reproduction of sunlight while remaining efficient in terms of cost. Though the burning of the gas did not asphyxiate the people around them, it did make them nauseous. With housing for the burning gas being a carbide like granite, fear of explosion or fire was nearly non-existent. It was also better than its competitors because it used one fifteenth the amount of gas as the normal gas burners.

The company gave a list of products with their price tags ranging from $70 to $300 ($1960.77 to $8403.28 in today’s market). Whether or not President Peterson purchased these items is unknown.</text>

This field trip would turn the baseball field into a huge classroom and would be broadcast online nationwide. The event was meant to educate young girls and boys about the rich history of women’s baseball from it's beginning in 1866 to present day through an interactive online experience. To honor both Women’s History Month and the 60 year anniversary of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League the event featured “Dirt on Their Skirts: 150 Years of Pioneers in Women’s Baseball”. This was hosted by Phil Niekro, coach of the Colorado Silver Bullets. He was accompanied by nine players from the original league including Dolly White. They educated students about the establishment of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League and their experiences playing in the league. Lesson plans for educators were provided by the National Baseball Hall of Fame on their website for the event.</text>

<text>Alabama College's fall bulletin in 1923 provides many details of the University of Montevallo’s early development. Identified as the “Extension Division Announcement 1923-1924,” it was the college’s first bulletin published under the name “Alabama College.” In light of the college’s success with its teacher training program in Columbiana, AL, where instructors from the college trained several teachers in order for them to teach higher levels of education, Alabama College announced its first ever correspondence courses. Any woman in the state of Alabama could apply to Alabama College and take courses through correspondence. It was the school’s first long-distance learning program. President Palmer saw this as a way to give back to Alabama during a time when Alabama needed its education system to produce admirable scholars and workers. Up to fifty percent of one’s degree could be taken through the correspondence program, a much higher margin than what is required today for transient students and interdisciplinary degrees. To further the prospective success of the program, the extension service will offer Study Centers. These are places where the College would sponsor teachers who occasionally met with their long-distance students in groups in order to produce further studies. Finally, the extension service offered lectures to students in nearly all fields of study offered at Alabama College. Palmer’s transition to Alabama College was a success, though, not complete. President Palmer continued to make developments for Alabama College that eventually laid the foundations of the University of Montevallo.</text>

His idea for starting the dairy was "to furnish the school with good wholesome milk and butter at a reasonable cost." By 1913 the Alabama College Dairy was up and running with a herd of fifty cows that supplied the dining hall with seventy-five gallons of milk each day. The dairy operated for fifty years and was well known for its ice cream which the girls were given three times per week. The ice cream was sometimes topped with fruits, chocolate, and caramel to cover the onion flavor when the cows would eat wild onions. </text>

<text>These are photographs of the Alabama College Dairy's cattle which consisted of both award-winning Holstein and Jersey cows. By the end of the dairy's operation in 1960, the cattle consisted of over a hundred cows. All cows occupying the campus farm were registered and certified for health and safety reasons; this ensured the production of the highest quality milk. Milk yielded by the dairy was specifically produced for the campus' use, however, any surplus milk did not go to waste. All excess inventory was sold to citizens of Montevallo and surrounding areas which provided additional profit for the school's general fund; while this was not the original purpose of the dairy it was an added benefit. In 1908, upon evaluating the school's great expense on supplying milk to the school from outside sources President Palmer and other school officials began to look into the details of establishing their own dairy. It was decided that the most cost-effective way to supply milk was maintaining their own dairy. The true purpose of establishing a dairy underneath the management of the school was multifaceted in that it provided the school with a product in great demand, additional income, and a new environment to create additional course work for their student populace. </text>

The check was made out for the amount of thirty dollars in prize money ( $435.29 in 2017). The Alabama College received this prize for the excellent showing of the College Dairy’s cattle herd in Advanced Registry in testing in Classification C for the 1928-29 testing year. The college’s herd consisted of over 100 dairy cows of two breeds, Holstein and Jersey, but this competition was for Holstein cows. The difference between the breeds can be seen in their coloration, Holsteins are the traditional black and white, whereas Jersey cows are brown. Neither the check nor the letter which accompanied it states what placing the college’s cows achieved in competition; instead it congratulates them on their excellent showing. This prize is a testament to the quality of cattle which were part of Alabama College’s dairy. </text>

Since Montevallo lacks a football team each year their homecoming traditions include student run events and culminate in a musical performance. College Night is completely student based and consists of two sides, Purple Side and Gold side. Delores “Dolly” Brumfield White can be found on the bottom row on the right hand side of the photo. While attending Montevallo, or at that time Alabama College for Girls, Dolly participated in College Night as a member of the Gold side. She performed small parts in the plays and was a member of the athletic teams as well. Her dedication to the school and Gold side did not stop when she graduated in 1954. She, along with many other alumni members, continued to attend College Night performances after graduation and many still attend today's performances. She is pictured with other members of the classes of 1950-1955. From left to right, Top Row: Bettie McDonald Martin (1951), Billie Rae Kohen (1953), Jeannine McElroy (1953), Bobbye K. Lightfoot (1952), Julie Tatum (1954), Margaret H. Utley (1952), Joyce Blake (1951). <text>The Becoming Sculpture was created by Ted Metz, a University of Montevallo art professor. The sculpture, 16 feet tall and made of bronze, was unveiled on February 15, 2003. The pedestal underneath the sculpture is made of limestone and red bricks. The sculpture depicts two hands: a young hand representing university students reaching out toward the future, and an older hand representing the university itself guiding the student to that future. The separation between the hands represents the student’s graduation. The older hand was modeled after Metz’s own hand, while the younger hand was modeled after one of his students’ hands. The sculpture was created on campus by about 40 university students under the direction of Metz and took 22 months to complete. Approximately 90 individual molds were cast using 5000 pounds of bronze. The sculpture stands near Main Hall and Wills Hall.</text>

<text>This article was published Sunday February 27, 1994 by Bill Piott of The Birmingham News. In this article Delores “Dolly” Brumsfield White talks about her playing days with the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League and how she played baseball to finance her education at The University of Montevallo. During the interview she talked about getting paid fifty-five dollars a week her first year in the league “Which was good money for women in those days.” White stated in the interview that she had played three years in the league before she came to The University of Montevallo and three years while she was attending the University. White stated that very few people knew that she played professional baseball and that in those days it was socially unacceptable to be a female athlete. She also talked about her childhood growing up in Prichard, Alabama and how she would play ball before and after school with the shipyard workers. She also talks about how her principal gave her permission to quit school and attend spring training with South Bend’s ball club in Havana Cuba at the age of 14. She played seven years in the league and retired at the age of twenty-one.</text>

A businessman and town notable, Reynolds lobbied for the state to build a school for girls in Montevallo. When the state agreed, Reynolds moved quickly to hire faculty, recruit students, and prepare for inaugural classes in 1896.

Reynolds was born in Tennessee. His family came to Alabama in the 1840s where they ran a stage coach business. During the Civil War (1861-1865) Reynolds entered the Confederate army as a private but left it a lieutenant. He carried out dangerous missions behind enemy lines and after the war locals gave him the honorary title captain.

Reynolds Hall is named for him.</text>

College Night is the Homecoming tradition of the University of Montevallo. It began in 1919 as a competition between the classes. It evolved into two sides represented by the school colors, purple and gold. In the early years of the competition each side would put together a stunt which was a short comedy, a dramatization, a slow song, and a pep song. </text>

<text>Cynthia Shackelford, a Montevallo alumna, took over as the university’s director of public relations in 1993. Until her death in 2011, she actively cultivated the campus’s reputation for ghosts. In fact, she welcomed a number of paranormal societies from as far away as California and Colorado to come visit the campus and take readings with their instruments. Shackelford had her own curious experiences while supervising the paranormal investigators on campus. She claimed to have witnessed unusual things herself such as the temperature dropping in King House from the 60s to the 40s in a matter of seconds – a sure sign of spirits – as well as furniture moving. Shackelford organized ghost tours and kept alive the stories told about Reynolds Theatre, King Cemetery, Main Dormitory, Palmer Hall and King House. The photograph of her reading a book at Carmichael Library appeared in "Controlled Vocabulary", Carmichael LIbrary's Blog, Sunday, April 15, 2007.</text>

Between 1957-1958, the dairy ended up going over its budget of $23,000. To meet the demands of the dairy's expenses, the budget for the dairy between 1958-1959 was increased to $26,700. Considering the dairy was created to lesson the costs of shipping in milk and also to create extra revenue from surplus milk being sold to people off of campus, the dairy was no longer serving the campus as effectively as it once had. </text>
