Prior to the construction of Flowerhill, the presidents of the Alabama Girls' Industrial School and the Alabama Girls' Technical Institute, two of Montevallo's predecessor institutions, lived in a number of different homes, both on campus and in the community. In the years just prior to Flowerhill's construction, the presidential home was located near where Palmer Hall stands today. Unfortunately, this structure was destroyed by fire in 1921, necessitating the construction of a new home. In the interim period, President Palmer and his family resided in the school's infirmary, which was then located near Main Hall. Although Flowerhill was constructed during the presidency of Dr. Palmer and designed by his wife, Dr. Palmer never actually lived in Flowerhill, as he died in the year of its completion. While the home has undergone some renovations in the intervening decades, Flowerhill has maintained much of its original appearance and architectural character. Today, Flowerhill is known for its expansive lawn, beautiful gardens, and its charming, red bricked walls. The president's home is the site of numerous events throughout the year, including the president's annual Christmas gathering and other formal events. During the 1940s, Alabama College, the state college for women, was a four-year degree-granting institution for women. Wills Hall was built in May 1921 after a number of Montevallo women formed literary clubs. The Alabama Federation of Women's Clubs supplied books. Prior to the building opening, books had been stored in random places including the baptist pastor's office to the "fun room" in the women's dorm. The building featured a 90-foot long reading room with arched Palladian windows. During the 1940's, as seen in the first photograph, more stacks were added, doubling the size of the building. Wills was renovated in 1968 to become the home of the College of Education. The new additions included air conditioning, new carpet, and an elevator. Wills was further renovated in 1975 to accommodate the growing College of Education, as it remains today. The twice-daily milking process took over an hour. After milking the cows were let out into the pasture to graze and walk around. The dairy was operated by university staff and students. It was used as a teaching tool for students to learn about farming and the cattle. The Alabama College supplied its students with milk, butter, and even ice cream from the dairy. It was also a source of income for the school. Surplus milk could be sold to Montevallo locals. This is picture was taken inside of the Alabama College milking facility in the mid-1930s. It includes descriptions of the college campus, environment, and avaliable course work in a pocket size format for convenience and easy distribution. On the page pictured, a description of Alabama College's "Health Program" is included; mentioned in this section of the bulletin is the College’s dairy which supplied milk to its dining halls. It states that at the time they had over a hundred registered cattle including both Holstein and Jersey cows. The College dairy operated between 1908 and 1960 before it was converted into housing for faculty.<br /><br /> The above mentioned bulletin was selected for exhibition to highlight the role of publications of its type in the school's history. These publications serve as recruiting mechanisms to sustain and increase enrollment. Identified as the “Extension Division Announcement 1923-1924,” it was the college’s first bulletin published under the name “Alabama College.” In light of the college’s success with its teacher training program in Columbiana, AL, where instructors from the college trained several teachers in order for them to teach higher levels of education, Alabama College announced its first ever correspondence courses. Any woman in the state of Alabama could apply to Alabama College and take courses through correspondence. It was the school’s first long-distance learning program. President Palmer saw this as a way to give back to Alabama during a time when Alabama needed its education system to produce admirable scholars and workers. Up to fifty percent of one’s degree could be taken through the correspondence program, a much higher margin than what is required today for transient students and interdisciplinary degrees. To further the prospective success of the program, the extension service will offer Study Centers. These are places where the College would sponsor teachers who occasionally met with their long-distance students in groups in order to produce further studies. Finally, the extension service offered lectures to students in nearly all fields of study offered at Alabama College. Palmer’s transition to Alabama College was a success, though, not complete. President Palmer continued to make developments for Alabama College that eventually laid the foundations of the University of Montevallo. He was born December 18, 1926, a Pure Bread Holstein-Friesian. The registry traces the cow’s lineage back 3 generations. Its father, called a sire, was Reserve All American, and its mother is called a dam. On the registry, it is simple one can tell the difference between his male and female ancestors male relatives list the number of children they fathered, while the female relatives give numbers relating to their production of milk and butter. The cow’s family tree has many impressive cows. His grandfather on his sire’s side, also named Matador Segis Walker, sired ten 1000 pound daughters; the cow’s great uncle had seven 1000 pound daughters, a record among sires at the time. Their sister, the cow’s great aunt, Segis Pietertja Peospect, was one year and two year champion milk producer. On his mother’s side, his Grandfather Colantha Johanna Lad had more daughters over 600 pounds milk in seven days than any other sire. Although there is no clear explanation as to why it was closed or when it was even discussed, the reports suggest it was due to financial reasons. Between 1957-1958, the dairy ended up going over its budget of $23,000. To meet the demands of the dairy's expenses, the budget for the dairy between 1958-1959 was increased to $26,700. Considering the dairy was created to lesson the costs of shipping in milk and also to create extra revenue from surplus milk being sold to people off of campus, the dairy was no longer serving the campus as effectively as it once had. There are no known images of Condie Cunningham, but many believe that one of the young women pictured is Miss Cunningham. Interestingly enough they did not start labeling the student’s pictures with their names until the following year in 1909. In Main Hall students would often gather around a chafing dish to make hot chocolate and talk. When the call was made for lights out someone blew the flame towards a bottle of alcohol which ignited and caught Miss Cunningham’s nightdress on fire. Students tried to wrap Miss Cunningham in a rug, but she began to run. By the time the flames were extinguished, she had been severely burned. Miss Cunningham suffered serve burns and was treated at the school. She died on February 6, 1908, 48 hours after the incident. Since 1909 students have said that Condie's ghost haunts Main Hall. Students speak of a ghost covered in flames. Others report hearing her in the shower screaming. Some sororities have made it part of their initiation to spend the night in the hall where Miss Cunningham was running when she caught fire. As captivating as the ghost story is and a part of the University’s history, the tragic accident gave President Palmer the leverage to make some much needed improvements to the Main Hall at the school. L. Wilkerson was the physician responsible for the care of the students during an outbreak of smallpox at the Alabama Girls Industrial School which is now the University of Montevallo. Dr. Wilkerson served the Alabama Girls Industrial School from 1899 to 1915. It was during this time in 1904 that the university had a smallpox outbreak during the fall session of school. The infirmary where Dr. Wilkerson worked is now called Peterson Hall on the University of Montevallo campus. It is unknown how many of the students were treated for small pox, but there is a letter from a father of a student dated November 24th 1904 requesting the vaccination his daughters. The vast majority of the correspondence from families to the university during the smallpox outbreak requests that the students stay at school. The belief is that the students would be under the very best medical care while attending the university. The school, then called the Alabama Girls Industrial School, required students to remain on campus unless they had the schools permission to leave. The above letter, drafted by the parents of a student, requests Dr. Peterson, the President of the school, to allow their daughter to come home for the “Christmas holidays.” The protection of the girls attending the university was the responsibility of the school in 1904. Dr. Peterson was charged with the welfare of the girls while they were away from home attending school, and he was looked upon like a father figure by the students and parents. Parents being required to ask for permission for their own children to return home when school was not even in session would thought of as crazy by today's standards. When the curfew signal sounded, the young ladies began to clean up their items. In their rush, the container of alcohol that worked as fuel for the burner spilled over and onto Cunningham’s nightgown. Her nightgown then caught fire which caused her to panic. In an attempt to put out the fire, her roommate threw a rug on her but it was to no avail. Two days later on February 6th, Cunningham died in a hospital from her injuries. In the years following Cunningham’s death, strange phenomena followed. Supposedly a face surrounded by flames appeared in the wood grain of her dorm room’s door. It is said to have reappeared in a subsequent door on Main Hall. This, coupled with accounts of hearing a woman running through the halls at night and screaming in the bathrooms, made residents of the room uncomfortable. Eventually the door was removed and the room sealed off. The last door is kept in storage at the University of Montevallo archives, but it is put on display in the library during the month of October for the spirit of Halloween. Title A name given to the resource Captain Henry Reynolds Date A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource Ca. 1897 Creator An entity primarily responsible for making the resource Alabama Girls' Industrial School Description An account of the resource Henry Clay Reynolds, first president of the Alabama Girls’ Industrial School, was not an educator, but rather an enthusiastic advocate for public education. A businessman and town notable, Reynolds lobbied for the state to build a school for girls in Montevallo. When the state agreed, Reynolds moved quickly to hire faculty, recruit students, and prepare for inaugural classes in 1896. Reynolds was born in Tennessee. His family came to Alabama in the 1840s where they ran a stage coach business. During the Civil War (1861-1865) Reynolds entered the Confederate army as a private but left it a lieutenant. He carried out dangerous missions behind enemy lines and after the war locals gave him the honorary title captain. Reynolds Hall is named for him. The Fair was held in Birmingham, AL at the state fairgrounds and was held from September 26th to October 1st. The letter came from the desk of the general manager, J.L. Deuhc, and is said to be followed by a list of premiums for entry and a blank entry form. A letter from F.W. Burns, the Livestock specialist at Auburn prompted the letter sent to Alabama College. Alabama College making an appearance at the state fair can be seen as a 1920’s marketing tool to increase the visibility of the college. Attending the fair also could be viewed as a way to fundraise by selling milk, other dairy products, and possibly even the cattle. It also could have served as a fun outing for the students and faculty. The sculpture, 16 feet tall and made of bronze, was unveiled on February 15, 2003. The pedestal underneath the sculpture is made of limestone and red bricks. The sculpture depicts two hands: a young hand representing university students reaching out toward the future, and an older hand representing the university itself guiding the student to that future. The separation between the hands represents the student’s graduation. The older hand was modeled after Metz’s own hand, while the younger hand was modeled after one of his students’ hands. The sculpture was created on campus by about 40 university students under the direction of Metz and took 22 months to complete. Approximately 90 individual molds were cast using 5000 pounds of bronze. The sculpture stands near Main Hall and Wills Hall. The letter is written by a building coordinator pleading with the board of trustees of Alabama College to build a new dairy and advising them on other building projects. The letter states exactly how much it would cost to repair the current dairy. The building coordinator starts by asking Alabama College to build a new dairy instead of making the repairs. At this time, the dairy was growing quickly. The building coordinator also states that if the cows stayed in the present location, it would be impossible to erect the new dormitory. Lastly, the letter states that were the cows moved from their current field, that field could be used as an athletic field. Title A name given to the resource Milking Machine Letter Date A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource March 26, 1918 Creator An entity primarily responsible for making the resource Empire Cream Separator Company Description An account of the resource The Correspondence between President Thomas Palmer, of the Alabama Girls’ Technical Institute, and the Empire Cream Separator Company in Bloomfield, New Jersey began on January 15, 1918. On February 18 he confirmed in a letter that he had purchased a milking machine for the Alabama Girls’ Technical Institute. The milking machine came with two double units, one number-two pumping outfit, 16 stall cocks, and four pipe clamps. The milking machine arrived on March 22, 1918. This letter, from March 26, is a response from the Empire Cream Separator Company to President Palmer’s request that they send someone to install the machine. The company tells President Palmer that they were sending an expert, Mr. C. W. Hill to set up their milker. They praise Mr. Hill as excellent choice to install the machine, and that he would arrive as soon as he could. They tell President Palmer that another person could come at once, but they there was no one better than Mr. Hill.
