Jeter hall was built in 1915 as an elementary school. It contained six classrooms, an auditorium, a music room, two storage rooms, a cafeteria, and one toilet. It functioned as a Education Laboratory School for students of Montevallo. Future teachers could practice their skills while observing qualified instructors. During the 1930's, lower elementary grades were housed in this building. This consists of kindergarten, first, and second grade students. By 1965, the building no longer served the needs of the community. Renovated with college labor, the building transformed into the social sciences building, adding classrooms and private offices for instructors. First social science classes were held February 5, 1965. During the 1940s, Alabama College, the state college for women, was a four-year degree-granting institution for women. Wills Hall was built in May 1921 after a number of Montevallo women formed literary clubs. The Alabama Federation of Women's Clubs supplied books. Prior to the building opening, books had been stored in random places including the baptist pastor's office to the "fun room" in the women's dorm. The building featured a 90-foot long reading room with arched Palladian windows. During the 1940's, as seen in the first photograph, more stacks were added, doubling the size of the building. Wills was renovated in 1968 to become the home of the College of Education. The new additions included air conditioning, new carpet, and an elevator. Wills was further renovated in 1975 to accommodate the growing College of Education, as it remains today. The issue deeply concerned Steelman and he made it the subject of his doctoral dissertation at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill: “A Study of Mob Action in the South” completed in 1928. Mob violence was something that he endeavored to understand and he believed it was important to speak with the perpetrators of such violence, but his opposition to lynching was not merely intellectual. When mobs threatened to kill someone Steelman would drive to the locale and speak with the principal actors. In Tuscaloosa he managed to secure the safe passage of a black man, Mr. Clarke, held at the jail who was in danger of being lynched. Steelman successfully negotiated his release from the Warden who allowed Steelman to drive Clarke to safety in Atlanta Georgia. During Reynolds' three years as president, he acquired 25,000 acres of public land from Congress and built the first residential wing of Main Hall. The Board of Trustees forced him to resign in 1899 due to questions about his management of public funds. Nonetheless, the school was on a solid footing after his tenure as president. A businessman and town notable, Reynolds lobbied for the state to build a school for girls in Montevallo. When the state agreed, Reynolds moved quickly to hire faculty, recruit students, and prepare for inaugural classes in 1896. Reynolds was born in Tennessee. His family came to Alabama in the 1840s where they ran a stage coach business. During the Civil War (1861-1865) Reynolds entered the Confederate army as a private but left it a lieutenant. He carried out dangerous missions behind enemy lines and after the war locals gave him the honorary title captain. Reynolds Hall is named for him. It houses several of the University of Montevallo's administrative offices, most notably the registrar's office, and is also home to the Palmer Auditorium. The 1,200-seat Auditorium serves most notably as a stage for the famous Homecoming tradition of College Night, which has been hosted there since 1930. The auditorium also plays host to celebrations and events concerning Founders' Day, Honors Day, and Fall Commencement. In 1979, Palmer Hall underwent extensive renovation, after falling into a state of disrepair over the fifty years since its initial construction. The ghost in question would be that of Dr. William H. Trumbauer, an ardent supporter of the school's theater department and one of the chief designers of Palmer Hall. Trumbauer's spirit is said to linger in Palmer Hall due to his lasting bitterness that his name was left off of the building's cornerstone, despite his instrumental role in its design and construction. Trumbauer's ghost (or "Trummy," as he is affectionately referred to on campus) is reportedly quite whimsical in his hauntings, sometimes seeing fit to visit the backstage of Palmer Hall during preparations for perfomances. His most notable exploit is said to be during the final dress rehearsal for College Night, where he will swing wooden battens over the stage (pictured), stopping them over the side (Purple or Gold) whose performance he most enjoyed. That side will supposedly win College Night. Due to Trumbauer's fervent support of the arts and his reputation as a perfectionist in life, as well as his relatively amicable nature in death, his existence as a ghost is widely accepted, and his approval of a performance is taken quite seriously. The building was one of two constructed in 1851 for the Montevallo Male Insitute. Not long after their construction, Reynolds Hall became known as the Female Academy and the other building as the Male Academy. These “Academies” were founded by two Presbyterian ministers, Dr. Gardner and Dr. Roach with the financial support of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and the surrounding towns-people. The Academies soon closed due to financial strain resulting from the pre-war tension and start of the Civil War. Documents report that the Male Academy was soon sold off as a place of residence to Judge Lyman family. With the war sweeping across the South, Reynolds Hall would soon become a historical landmark for the city of Montevallo. As Union forces neared the small town, townsmen collected in front of Reynolds to volunteer and gather Confederate troops for the oncoming battle. As one of the oldest buildings on campus with such a divided history, it is no wonder Reynolds Hall developed its own ghost story. From the very start of Alabama College, Reynolds Hall was affectionately known as The Chapel. Until Bloch Hall was constructed in 1915, The Chapel was the only building owned by Alabama College that was not used for housing. The girls went there for all their administrative needs, classes, and assemblies, including, of course, chapel. In 1925 The Chapel was finally given the official name of Reynolds Hall in honor of Alabama College’s first president, Henry Reynolds. As well as being the school’s founder, Reynolds had another reported tie with the building. Reynolds supposedly took charge of the hall during the Civil War, giving a foothold for the ghost story students excitedly passed around, and still pass to this day, in mere whispers.
