This was made necessary because there are some important matters that need your attention before the close of the session. Before taking up these topics, permit me to state that the session of 1923-24 has been the most successful in the history of the institution. The change of the name by the Legislature to Alabama College met with hearty approval thruout [sic.] the state. The publication of a four-year college course in the catalogue of 1923 did not arouse much interest at first, but as announcements were made from time to time of the appointment of teachers of full college rank, the interest in the institution increased. When it was realized that a college faculty was actually a certainty, applications for enrollment cam in rapidly. In a short time, all rooms were engaged by prospective students, and may names were placed on the waiting list. To make room for more students, most of the teachers gave up their rooms in the dormitory and found lodging elsewhere. The citizens of Montevallo became deeply concerned, and through the Exchange Club proposed to erect a temporary dormitory to accommodate sixty students. This was soon filled, and even then some applicants, eager to come, had to be denied admission because parents did not wish their daughters to room elsewhere than in college buildings. Enrollment The total enrollment is six hundred fifty-two, distributed by classes as follows: Seniors 31 Juniors 68 Sophmores 130 Freshmen 316 Specials 18 565 High School 89 Total 652 Students were admitted again to the third and fourth years of high school work because no announcement had been made to the contrary and it was not definitely known when the catalog was in preparation that the college standard would be attained by teh opening of the session. The few high school students not graduating this year will be allowed to continue in the dormitory for next session, but no new high school students will be admitted. The letter discusses the difficulty that the College faced in recruiting classes until their staff was completed and they were able to pull in the numbers of students they required until they finally had to expand the available housing and then begin to deny requests as there was no longer any available room. It also mentions how parents were concerned for the availability of dormitory space availability and that some professors forwent their accommodations on campus for housing in the town of Montevallo. Laacke Company Description An account of the resource An advertisement sent to the Alabama College Business Manager, W.J. Bailey, for a Cow Blanket from the R. Laacke Company. There is a letter that precedes the advertisement which alludes to the fact that it is the third letter which was sent after the College requested information regarding the companies cow blankets. The letter includes a folksy story is apparently a prompt to extort a response from the Business Manager as a sales tactic. The Alabama College at this time maintained a herd of dairy cows to supply the faculty and students needs for dairy products as the College was located in a rather remote location from services other colleges would be afforded. After the dairy grew, it even provided a source of income as the excess dairy was sold off as a source of revenue. The initial inquiry was most likely sent as part of their efforts to outfit the herd with supplies. Text Any textual data included in the document A FAITHFUL HORSE Old Proctor Passes Away at a Ripe Age On Saturday, August 11th, 1917, this noted old horse, belonging to Dr. T. W. Palmer, passed away. Every Citizen of Montevallo knew old Proctor, and there were many expressions of regret when it was learned that he was dead "How long have you owned Proctor," asked the Advertiser man of Dr. Palmer. "I Bought him September 1st, 1892, from a drove in Tuscaloosa. Has he lived three weeks longer he would have been in my possession just twenty-five years. He was supposed to be seven years old when I bought him ; so he was probably thirty-two years of age." "Your family will probably miss him." "Yes, he was truly a member of the family. When young he was one of the best saddle and buggy horses in the State. We often drove him twenty-five or thirty miles in one day, hitched to a surrey with four grown people in it, -sometimes with two adults and six or seven children. He has pulled the surrey, with four or five adults, to Calera in forty-five or fifty minutes, when the roads were worse than they are now. he was well known to thousands of young men and women over this country. During the past twelve months I have had inquiries concerning him from eight different states and from nearly every county in this State. "A good and true story is told about him concerning the last appropriation to the A.G.T.I. Six years ago, when the appropriation bill was before the legislature, all such bills were postponed in the House until the last day when such matters could be taken up. Each member was allowed to call only one bill. The representative in charge of the A.G.T.I. measure has called up another bill and, therefore, could not bring up ours. Every other member, it seems, had a bill to bring up and would not give way for us. There was no opposition to our bill; we simply had to get a man who would agree to call it up. Eleven o'clock had come and midnight was fast approaching. The legislature would then adjoun, and our chance would be forever lost. You can imagine my desperation. Finally, a friend said to me, 'I think I know a man whom I can get to call your bill.' 'Get him at once,' said I. When that legislator's ear was gotten he could not recall me, at first, and did not want to call a bill unless he knew something of the people back of it. Explanations were quickly made by my friend that it was for the A.G.T.I., and that I had one lived in Tuscaloosa, etc, etc. Finally, the honorable representative said: 'O yes I recall him; I visited Tuscaloosa once to see my sick boy, and this fellow took me to ride behind old Proctor. I will call the bill up-not for Paler's sake- but for the sake of old Proctor.' Bloch hall and the new Music Building are the results of that act. Old Proctor was thus a genuine benefactor to the A.G.T.I., for the good impression that he made upon a stranger enabled us to procure, at the critical moment, the money used in the construction of two of our best buildings. Peace to the faithful old animal !" It is creditable to Dr.Palmer that Proctor made such a good impression and lived to a good old age. This document, commemorating the death of Dr. Palmer's horse of twenty five years, Old Proctor, also allows for a short insight into the funding decisions of the Alabama Girl's Technical Institute, or A.G.T.I. during the early years of his administration. The short article goes into the small details of Old Proctor's life, including details of trips he had been a part of in the past. It also allows us to see President Palmer as more than just a figure of repute, and as a simple southerner like the majority of the graduates of Montevallo. Though the man would likely not agree wholly with the way in which our University has progressed, he set the foundations for a four year liberal arts institute, and without this work we would not be where we are today. Capen, Gay-Teague Hotel, Montgomery, Alabama, Dear Dr. Capen:- I tried to call you yesterday and today over the telephone but failed to reach you. One statement of fact I wish to suggest to you concerning the A.G.T.I. is that you failed to make any mention of our strong work in music - a technical subject. We have developed unusual strength in Home Economics as your report stated. We have done perhaps equally as much in music, but this was not mentioned. I called your attention to the omission of our Summer School work. Concerning the matter of continuing a purely technical school, I wish to state that was always our purpose, but we did wish to raise it to a technical school of college standard. It was not our intention to make it a literary college, but to develop along technical lines young women, as Auburn has done for men. For that reason, we thought we should do both the Smith-Lever and the Smith-Hughes work. However, I realize that it takes considerable money to develop such an institution, and under present conditions, it may not be possible for us to get the proper amount of money. I should like very much to discuss this feature with the Board. You will understand that I do not think, and I hope you did not get the opinion from me that I though, that you and your associates had any idea of injuring this Institute, for I did not intend to convey such an impression. I did think that the recommendations you made would injure the school, however much you might intend to do otherwise. I have thought more about the statement you made in regard to our work here. I can see there is a good opening for such a school, provided it is not narrowed down too much. You cannot have good technical work without a good substratus of literary work. In other words, there must be good work in English, History, Foreign Languages, Education, Sociology, and Mathematics in addition to the allied sciences. It is because of this broad training that we have insisted upon that we have been enabled to do as much as we have done. There are some excellent people in the state who believe that this institution should be narrowed down solely for poor girls, and for that reason, it should be a poor school. I am very thankful that we have been able to draw a large number of students of limited means, and I trust that we shall always do so, but because these girls have limited means is no reason why they should have limited opportunities, but a very strong reason why they should have the highest opportunities. The rich girls should not be excluded because I firmly believe that the education we have given is as much needed by the rich as by the poor. I shall always be opposed to a state institution for classes; that is, the poor against the rich or the rich against the poor. If you can, put in a statement to the effect that the form of education that we give, or should give, is an expensive one, and will require considerable money for presenting it properly. Our Professors and Associate Professors should be paid salaries equal to those given college professors in our state University. Unless we offer such salaries, we can never draw to us the stronger talent. I hope you can see your way clear to get in a statement of this kind for us. There are many forms of technical instruction that should be presented and we can bring them in splendidly provided we have the means to do it. We should not be limited to a two-year college course. As I stated to you the other day, our work had been increased in efficiency nearly one per cent. by adding the three-year college course. We should be allowed to bring on the three-year college course in technical work, or four years in course of desirable four or five years from today. For my part, I should like to discontinue the training of teachers for elementary schools. I never wanted it to begin with, but there was such a demand for teachers trained as we trained them here that we fell into it by degrees. The fact is, the courses of study that we have offered are, in my opinion, the very best for teachers. The success of our pupils has shown that we have trained them properly. As to the training of high school teachers, if arrangements could be made with the Education Department for us to train teachers in Home Economics, Music, Commercial subjects, and in other technical lines, it would suit us very well indeed. Many of the high schools with to present Stenography, Typewriting, and Bookkeeping. We could easily train teachers for these subjects. If I could go before the Commission, I think I could make all these points clear, and I believe you would agree with what I have to suggest to them. It is clear from the document that Capen had doubts about the "literary education" Dr. Palmer championed. This letter illustrates Dr. Palmer's passion and some of the challenges he faced. For instance, he would need the resources to pay salaries to a college level faculty, increased staff, and an increased number of credit hours. The paper also states that though his school did indeed attract many poor women to its doors, it should not be labeled a poor women's school, so as not to detract wealthier women and their family's purses from attendance. Capen who was a higher education specialist for the U.S. Bureau of Education (19114-1919) and subsequently the first director of the American Council on Education (1919-1922). This item shows that Dr. Palmer had been in correspondence with Capen and the fact that Capen is a higher education specialist indicates that the school's president was preparing the transition of the school from a technical college to a four year university not only so that it could both provide a more rigorous education, but so that it could attract more qualified educators. This item also allows us to understand why this transition took so many years, as Dr. Palmer had to personally correspond with the leadership of the Bureau of Education, a department within the halls of government inside of Washington, D.C. It is understood by many within the educating field that working through bureaucracy in order to enact any change is a difficult measure. Until her death in 2011, she actively cultivated the campus’s reputation for ghosts. In fact, she welcomed a number of paranormal societies from as far away as California and Colorado to come visit the campus and take readings with their instruments. Shackelford had her own curious experiences while supervising the paranormal investigators on campus. She claimed to have witnessed unusual things herself such as the temperature dropping in King House from the 60s to the 40s in a matter of seconds – a sure sign of spirits – as well as furniture moving. This “illumination machine” boasted multiple times that it used the best gas for lighting. Its use of Acetylene gas was to have the best reproduction of sunlight while remaining efficient in terms of cost. Though the burning of the gas did not asphyxiate the people around them, it did make them nauseous. With housing for the burning gas being a carbide like granite, fear of explosion or fire was nearly non-existent. It was also better than its competitors because it used one fifteenth the amount of gas as the normal gas burners. The company gave a list of products with their price tags ranging from $70 to $300 ($1960.77 to $8403.28 in today’s market). Whether or not President Peterson purchased these items is unknown. This company sent a brochure to Peterson of the items that they sold. Toilets. Ahrens and Ott began back in 1865 as a plumbing and pipe fitting company. The company merged with Dawes and Myler Manufacturing Company and seven others in 1899 and became the Standard Sanitary Manufacturing Company. In the brochure, toilets ranged from prices in the low $20s to high $80s. Two of which were priced at $42 and $39. These prices by today’s standards would be $1176.46 and $1092.43. Whether or not if President Peterson purchased these toilets is unknown. Although classes offered in the early 1900s reflected what society deemed appropriate and useful at the time, the promotion of higher education for women is one proud heritage for the University of Montevallo. What a wonderful time to be at the Alabama Girls Industrial School. The school tuition was only $94.55. What a bargain! Well, not exactly. This was a little while ago, 1900. The same money would be about $2,648.43 in today’s dollars, but back then the girls also received classes for free such as elocution, scientific cooking, and dressmaking. Things changed significantly in 1903. The fee was now lowered to $92. That price is now about $2,387.18, but freehand drawing and sight singing were now free classes too. Montevallo would be hard pressed to get the student body to sign up for these classes in modern times, even if they were free. It is possible that Condie Cunningham would have been in her freshman year in this photograph. Cunningham died in 1908 after suffering burn injuries when her nightgown caught fire from the flame of a chafing dish. At the time, the building did not have a fire safety system and to prevent future incidents, a water tank and fire escapes were installed. The herd and the dairy equipment were sold. The Dairy barn was then converted into an apartment house. The five two-bedroom and two three-bedroom apartment became faculty housing from 1965 to 1990. The faculty apartments were nice and had elevated views of the college campus. They were given a variety of nicknames from the students and locals such as Bovine Barracks, Hereford Heights, and the most popular name Moo Manor. Title A name given to the resource Ghost of Main Hall: What Condie Cunningham Left Behind Date A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource February 4, 1908 Creator An entity primarily responsible for making the resource Alabama Girls Industrial School Description An account of the resource On the night of February 4th of 1908, Alabama Girls Industrial School student Condie Cunningham and her roommate were making hot chocolate on a chafing dish in their room. When the curfew signal sounded, the young ladies began to clean up their items. In their rush, the container of alcohol that worked as fuel for the burner spilled over and onto Cunningham’s nightgown. Her nightgown then caught fire which caused her to panic. In an attempt to put out the fire, her roommate threw a rug on her but it was to no avail. Two days later on February 6th, Cunningham died in a hospital from her injuries. In the years following Cunningham’s death, strange phenomena followed. Supposedly a face surrounded by flames appeared in the wood grain of her dorm room’s door. It is said to have reappeared in a subsequent door on Main Hall. This, coupled with accounts of hearing a woman running through the halls at night and screaming in the bathrooms, made residents of the room uncomfortable. Eventually the door was removed and the room sealed off. The last door is kept in storage at the University of Montevallo archives, but it is put on display in the library during the month of October for the spirit of Halloween. His idea for starting the dairy was "to furnish the school with good wholesome milk and butter at a reasonable cost." By 1913 the Alabama College Dairy was up and running with a herd of fifty cows that supplied the dining hall with seventy-five gallons of milk each day. The dairy operated for fifty years and was well known for its ice cream which the girls were given three times per week. The ice cream was sometimes topped with fruits, chocolate, and caramel to cover the onion flavor when the cows would eat wild onions. The sculpture, 16 feet tall and made of bronze, was unveiled on February 15, 2003. The pedestal underneath the sculpture is made of limestone and red bricks. The sculpture depicts two hands: a young hand representing university students reaching out toward the future, and an older hand representing the university itself guiding the student to that future. The separation between the hands represents the student’s graduation. The older hand was modeled after Metz’s own hand, while the younger hand was modeled after one of his students’ hands. The sculpture was created on campus by about 40 university students under the direction of Metz and took 22 months to complete. Approximately 90 individual molds were cast using 5000 pounds of bronze. The sculpture stands near Main Hall and Wills Hall. Construction for the building began in May 1913, and it was ready to house patients less than a year later in April 1914. Previously, injured or ill students were housed on the second floor of Main Hall, and later in Nabors Hall, which is now called King House. Peterson Hall is two stories tall, with two-story porches in the front and rear of the building. Up through 1987, it housed the Health and Counseling Centers. After renovations it was reopened in 2014 as a part of the Art Department. This letter is a response by a parent having been notified of a smallpox outbreak at the school. This was not the first outbreak that happened at the school. The letter reveals the trust placed in Dr. Peterson, the President of the school. There are many letters by parents in response to being notified of smallpox at the school just like this one. Each letter proclaims the ability of Dr. Peterson to be responsible for the safety of the students, and being loved for his actions. The school, then called the Alabama Girls Industrial School, required students to remain on campus unless they had the schools permission to leave. The above letter, drafted by the parents of a student, requests Dr. Peterson, the President of the school, to allow their daughter to come home for the “Christmas holidays.” The protection of the girls attending the university was the responsibility of the school in 1904. Dr. Peterson was charged with the welfare of the girls while they were away from home attending school, and he was looked upon like a father figure by the students and parents. Parents being required to ask for permission for their own children to return home when school was not even in session would thought of as crazy by today's standards. L. Wilkerson was the physician responsible for the care of the students during an outbreak of smallpox at the Alabama Girls Industrial School which is now the University of Montevallo. Dr. Wilkerson served the Alabama Girls Industrial School from 1899 to 1915. It was during this time in 1904 that the university had a smallpox outbreak during the fall session of school. The infirmary where Dr. Wilkerson worked is now called Peterson Hall on the University of Montevallo campus. It is unknown how many of the students were treated for small pox, but there is a letter from a father of a student dated November 24th 1904 requesting the vaccination his daughters. The vast majority of the correspondence from families to the university during the smallpox outbreak requests that the students stay at school. Title A name given to the resource Dr. Thomas Waverly Palmer Date A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource Unknown Creator An entity primarily responsible for making the resource Unknown Description An account of the resource Dr. Thomas Waverly Palmer (1860-1926) was the third president of the University of Montevallo, and one of its most influential. Having previously served as a Dean and Professor of Mathematics at the University of Alabama, he became president of the University of Montevallo (then known as the Alabama Girls' Industrial School) in 1907. He served almost 19 years as president -- the longest tenure of any president in the school's history -- until his death in 1926. As president, Palmer was instrumental in the expansion of the school's facilities. He became president when the school was frequently overcrowded, so during his tenure, he oversaw the construction of many new buildings. These new buildings included Bloch Hall (the first building dedicated entirely to academics), Ramsay Hall, the president's house at Flower Hill (after the original president's home had burnt down in 1921), the Tower (which served as the school's main water supply until 1962), a dairy, and, of course, Palmer Hall. Palmer also purchased King House, one of the oldest buildings in Montevallo, for the school. Palmer also greatly expanded the school's academic focus. In 1911, the Alabama Girls' Industrial School was renamed to the Alabama Girls' Technical Institute, with the phrase "and College for Women" later added in 1919, due to the addition of liberal arts courses to the curriculum. In 1923, the school was renamed yet again to Alabama College, State College for Women. This signaled a shift from the previous focus on technical training and high-school level education, to a degree-granting, college level institution - a shift that was cemented when Palmer got the schools accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools in 1925. Edmund King moved from Virigina and settled down in Montevallo in 1823. The original portrait still resides in King House where it continues to hang. Edmund King is the center of some supernatural speculation concerning King House. There are many rumors and early accounts that suggest his spirit still haunts the very mansion he built, bound to this Earth realm by the very wealth he used to build his home. This photo of students in front of the King House in 1905 demonstrates that although the university did not actually own the King House yet university students spent time near it. It the early 1900s rumors developed that the ghost of Edmund King still roamed the house. Several accounts dating back to the early 1900s suggest that eerie unexplained things occurred in that house such as the sounds of someone moving around in an empty room or the counting of change when no one was there. Title A name given to the resource The Tea House Date A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource Early 1950's Creator An entity primarily responsible for making the resource Unknown Description An account of the resource This photo shows students in the early 1950’s purchasing snacks, drinks, and other convenience items at the Tea House, one of the many purposes Reynolds Hall briefly served as the University campus expanded. By this time in the school’s history, the ghost story surrounding Reynolds Hall had begun taking a more firm shape. According to report and rumor, President Reynolds was a colonel in the Confederate Army and had in fact been given charge of the Hall which had begun functioning as a hospital for wounded soldiers. Reynolds could not help but respond to the call when Sherman’s Troop attacked the Briarfield Iron Works a short distance away. The story goes that by the time Reynolds got back to Montevallo, the hall that would eventually bear his name had been attacked and the wounded soldiers taking refuge there massacred. It was then Reynolds, feeling the weight of guilt having left the hall, vowed to never leave again. To this day there are reports of hauntings in Reynolds Hall from various students and late night maintenance workers, including a portrait of Reynolds himself moving around the building without being touched. Title A name given to the resource Reynolds, 1920 Date A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource 1920 Creator An entity primarily responsible for making the resource Unknown Description An account of the resource This photo displays students of Alabama College, now known as The University of Montevallo, convened in front of Reynold’s Hall as it existed in 1920. From the very start of Alabama College, Reynolds Hall was affectionately known as The Chapel. Until Bloch Hall was constructed in 1915, The Chapel was the only building owned by Alabama College that was not used for housing. The girls went there for all their administrative needs, classes, and assemblies, including, of course, chapel. In 1925 The Chapel was finally given the official name of Reynolds Hall in honor of Alabama College’s first president, Henry Reynolds. As well as being the school’s founder, Reynolds had another reported tie with the building. Reynolds supposedly took charge of the hall during the Civil War, giving a foothold for the ghost story students excitedly passed around, and still pass to this day, in mere whispers.
