There are no known images of Condie Cunningham, but many believe that one of the young women pictured is Miss Cunningham. Interestingly enough they did not start labeling the student’s pictures with their names until the following year in 1909. In Main Hall students would often gather around a chafing dish to make hot chocolate and talk. When the call was made for lights out someone blew the flame towards a bottle of alcohol which ignited and caught Miss Cunningham’s nightdress on fire. Students tried to wrap Miss Cunningham in a rug, but she began to run. By the time the flames were extinguished, she had been severely burned. Miss Cunningham suffered serve burns and was treated at the school. She died on February 6, 1908, 48 hours after the incident. Since 1909 students have said that Condie's ghost haunts Main Hall. Students speak of a ghost covered in flames. Others report hearing her in the shower screaming. Some sororities have made it part of their initiation to spend the night in the hall where Miss Cunningham was running when she caught fire. As captivating as the ghost story is and a part of the University’s history, the tragic accident gave President Palmer the leverage to make some much needed improvements to the Main Hall at the school. In March, because of the tragic accident with Condie Cunningham, this time when President Palmer asked for a water tower he got it. He also wanted fire escapes for Main Hall. He believed that the building was inadequately equipped in case of a fire. This time his request did not fall on deaf ears. The water tower and fire escape were added in late 1908. He also saw to it an infirmary was added to the campus. Up until that point, the sick were cared for in the same building. Therefore, it was hard to contain contagious diseases. So adding another building to care for the sick was very important to President Palmer. During the time she played for the Blue Sox she was only fifteen years old and was a utility infielder/outfielder. It was during her time on this team that she gained her nickname “Dolly”. In the Blue Sox, Dolly was managed by Chet Grant, a former Notre Dame assistant football coach. Her team also finished fourth out of eight teams with a 57-54 record. Description An account of the resource Jimmie Fox was born 10/22/07 in Sudlersville, Maryland. He threw right handed and batted right handed. He hit 534 home runs during his time in the league making him only the second player in major league history to hit over 500 home runs. Jimmy Foxx was also the recipient of 3 MVP awards. He also served as a manager in the AAGBL. Foxx led the Fort Wayne Daisies to the playoffs in 1952. Dolly played infield and outfield for the Ft. Wayne Daisies in 1952 and 1953 belting 3 home runs. One of these home run balls is signed by Jimmy Foxx and part of this collection. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1951. After retiring from her baseball career, Dolly began to work at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas beginning in 1963. Her duties were various. She taught physical education as well as recreational classes. She coached a swim team from 1963-1982. Dolly remained a professor at Henderson State until 1994 when she retired and was honored with the title professor emeritus. Dolly would continue to contribute to the University when in the late 90’s there was a decision to add a women’s softball team, in which she helped organize the “Diamond Reddies” which was the softball team’s booster club. On October 13, 2007 Dolly was honored by seeing the Henderson State University softball field renamed as the “Dr. Delores ‘Dolly’ Brumsfield-White Softball Field” in a dedication ceremony. During this ceremony Delores “Dolly” Brumfield(White) was presented with a jersey to honor her as a honorary member of the University’s inaugural softball team coached by Lindsey Vanover. Unfortunately national athletic associations did not sanction women’s sports while Dolly attended the University(graduated in 1954). Thus , she was never able to represent the University on a competitive level. The manner in which the University honored was befitting of her accomplishments. College Night is completely student based and consists of two sides, Purple Side and Gold side. Delores “Dolly” Brumfield White can be found on the bottom row on the right hand side of the photo. While attending Montevallo, or at that time Alabama College for Girls, Dolly participated in College Night as a member of the Gold side. She performed small parts in the plays and was a member of the athletic teams as well. Her dedication to the school and Gold side did not stop when she graduated in 1954. She, along with many other alumni members, continued to attend College Night performances after graduation and many still attend today's performances. This field trip would turn the baseball field into a huge classroom and would be broadcast online nationwide. The event was meant to educate young girls and boys about the rich history of women’s baseball from it's beginning in 1866 to present day through an interactive online experience. To honor both Women’s History Month and the 60 year anniversary of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League the event featured “Dirt on Their Skirts: 150 Years of Pioneers in Women’s Baseball”. This was hosted by Phil Niekro, coach of the Colorado Silver Bullets. He was accompanied by nine players from the original league including Dolly White. They educated students about the establishment of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League and their experiences playing in the league. Title A name given to the resource Dolly's Home Run Ball Date A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource August 25, 1952 Description An account of the resource The baseball depicted is a home run ball hit by Delores “Dolly” Brumfield White during the 1952 season. Delores began playing in the All American Girls Professional Baseball League at the age of 14. She played seven seasons in the league from 1947 to 1953. During the 1952 season Delores played for the Fort Wayne Daisies. This baseball is especially significant because it is the only home run ball hit by Delores during the 1952 season. The home run ball was hit off of Jean Marlowe of the Kalamazoo Lassies. The Baseball is signed by the players of the Fort Wayne Daisies and their Baseball Hall of Fame manager Jimmie Foxx. Jimmie Foxx played in the majors from 1925 to 1945. He is a three time American League MVP, two time world champion, and the winner of the 1933 Triple Crown. The House was built by slaves who took clay from a nearby river to build the bricks and glass windows were imported to add to the effect of grandeur. The glass windows were the first to be seen is this part of the town and where a symbol of prosperity to the King family. The King house has been used for many different purposes since 1823 such as a classroom, a summer dorm and office buildings. Today the house is as much as a symbol as well as a usable home. There is a short biography printed on this particular reprint indicates that Delores White was only 14 years of age when she attended spring training in Havana Cuba in 1947. She led the Kenosha Comets in hitting in 1951 and finished second in the league in hitting in 1953. In this article Delores “Dolly” Brumsfield White talks about her playing days with the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League and how she played baseball to finance her education at The University of Montevallo. During the interview she talked about getting paid fifty-five dollars a week her first year in the league “Which was good money for women in those days.” White stated in the interview that she had played three years in the league before she came to The University of Montevallo and three years while she was attending the University. White stated that very few people knew that she played professional baseball and that in those days it was socially unacceptable to be a female athlete. She also talked about her childhood growing up in Prichard, Alabama and how she would play ball before and after school with the shipyard workers. She also talks about how her principal gave her permission to quit school and attend spring training with South Bend’s ball club in Havana Cuba at the age of 14. She played seven years in the league and retired at the age of twenty-one. Title A name given to the resource The Tower Date A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource 1942 Creator An entity primarily responsible for making the resource University of Montevallo Description An account of the resource The Tower, pictured above, is one of the most recognizable and historic structures on the University of Montevallo's campus. Erected in 1910, the Tower provided the Alabama Girls' Industrial School, the name by which the University of Montevallo was then known, with a steady supply of water. Centrally-located and capable of holding up to 100,000 gallons of water, the Tower's water tank allowed access to clean water for both the campus and the community of Montevallo. In 1942, the year in which this photograph appeared in the <em>Montage</em>, the Tower held Alabama College's water supply and was the site of the school's fire siren. The Tower continued to serve as the school's water supply until 1962. Since that time, the Tower has served a number of functions for Alabama College, and later, the University of Montevallo. Over one hundred years after its construction, the Tower is now the home of the University of Montevallo's Environmental Studies Program and the Office of Sustainability Initiatives. Since 1932, Montevallo's student literary publication, <em>The Tower</em>, has been named after this famous structure. Title A name given to the resource Flowerhill, the University of Montevallo's Presidential Home Date A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource c. 1940 Creator An entity primarily responsible for making the resource Alabama College Description An account of the resource Since its construction in 1926, Flowerhill has served as the home of the presidents of Alabama College and the University of Montevallo. Prior to the construction of Flowerhill, the presidents of the Alabama Girls' Industrial School and the Alabama Girls' Technical Institute, two of Montevallo's predecessor institutions, lived in a number of different homes, both on campus and in the community. In the years just prior to Flowerhill's construction, the presidential home was located near where Palmer Hall stands today. Unfortunately, this structure was destroyed by fire in 1921, necessitating the construction of a new home. In the interim period, President Palmer and his family resided in the school's infirmary, which was then located near Main Hall. Although Flowerhill was constructed during the presidency of Dr. Palmer and designed by his wife, Dr. Palmer never actually lived in Flowerhill, as he died in the year of its completion. While the home has undergone some renovations in the intervening decades, Flowerhill has maintained much of its original appearance and architectural character. Today, Flowerhill is known for its expansive lawn, beautiful gardens, and its charming, red bricked walls. The president's home is the site of numerous events throughout the year, including the president's annual Christmas gathering and other formal events. Spring graduation, the university's largest commencement ceremony, is held on Flowerhill's lawn each May.
