Between 1957-1958, the dairy ended up going over its budget of $23,000. To meet the demands of the dairy's expenses, the budget for the dairy between 1958-1959 was increased to $26,700. Considering the dairy was created to lesson the costs of shipping in milk and also to create extra revenue from surplus milk being sold to people off of campus, the dairy was no longer serving the campus as effectively as it once had. </text>

The registry traces the cow’s lineage back 3 generations. Its father, called a sire, was Reserve All American, and its mother is called a dam. On the registry, it is simple one can tell the difference between his male and female ancestors male relatives list the number of children they fathered, while the female relatives give numbers relating to their production of milk and butter. The cow’s family tree has many impressive cows. His grandfather on his sire’s side, also named Matador Segis Walker, sired ten 1000 pound daughters; the cow’s great uncle had seven 1000 pound daughters, a record among sires at the time. Their sister, the cow’s great aunt, Segis Pietertja Peospect, was one year and two year champion milk producer. On his mother’s side, his Grandfather Colantha Johanna Lad had more daughters over 600 pounds milk in seven days than any other sire. </text>

<text>Beginning on October 15, 1917 President Thomas Palmer entered into correspondence with the Hinman Milking Machine Company based in Oneida, New York. He was seeking information about purchasing a milking machine for the dairy farm at the Alabama Girls’ Technical Institute. The company gladly sent President Palmer a catalog of information about what products they were able to offer and an envelope containing multiple additions of volume two of The Hinman Handshake advertising pamphlets. These materials were likely used to provide potential buyers with quick and thorough information about the company’s offerings and capabilities. A pamphlet included content such as: a specific example of a farm in Owatonna Minnesota where they use Hinman Milkers, and the city of Lowell, Massachusetts where 171 Hinman Milking Machines within a five mile radius. President Palmer sends a letter back to the company. However, he ultimately chose to purchase a milking machine from another company.</text>

<text>The Holstein Friesian Association of America sent Alabama College (as The University of Montevallo was known from 1923 to 1969) a check on May 28, 1929. The check was made out for the amount of thirty dollars in prize money ( $435.29 in 2017). The Alabama College received this prize for the excellent showing of the College Dairy’s cattle herd in Advanced Registry in testing in Classification C for the 1928-29 testing year. The college’s herd consisted of over 100 dairy cows of two breeds, Holstein and Jersey, but this competition was for Holstein cows. The difference between the breeds can be seen in their coloration, Holsteins are the traditional black and white, whereas Jersey cows are brown. Neither the check nor the letter which accompanied it states what placing the college’s cows achieved in competition; instead it congratulates them on their excellent showing. This prize is a testament to the quality of cattle which were part of Alabama College’s dairy. </text>

More significant changes were made within the text of the catalog. In April 1923, the catalog listed the following Laboratory Fees per quarter:
Art $2.00
Bacteriology $4.00
Biology $3.00
Chemistry $2.00
Food Courses $2.00
Physics $2.00
Clothing Courses $1.00
Use of Typewriter $2.00

In April 1924, Laboratory Fees were listed as the following:
Art $3.00
Bacteriology $4.00
Biology $3.00
Chemistry $2.00
Food Courses $4.50
Physics $2.00
Clothing Courses $1.50
Use of Typewriter $2.00

While costs were slightly raised in the aforementioned fees, a new line item was added altogether. The school was now charging a $12.50 Tuition Fee per quarter, resulting in a $37.50 annual cost on its own.

<text>On August 15, 1927 Alabama College received a letter containing an advertisement for a new insecticide called Grim Reaper, along with a free sample of the product. The pesticide’s pricing was relatively inexpensive even when adjusted for inflation. A five-gallon drum cost $1.25 per gallon ($17.72 in 2017), the 30-gallon drums cost $1.20 per gallon ($17.01 in 2017). The company approached the college because their product could serve a use for their dairy farm. According to the advertisement, among types of insects the spray kills are cow flies, fleas, and hog lice all of which pose a problem for cows. Additionally the spray could have been used in the dormitories to address bed bugs, roaches or ants which are also among the bugs the spray is effective against. The advertisement is an example of early twentieth century advertising, it does not contain the wordy health and safety warnings on modern products. It also sports a depiction of the Grim Reaper and the slogan “Death’s message to insects.” </text>

On February 18 he confirmed in a letter that he had purchased a milking machine for the Alabama Girls’ Technical Institute. The milking machine came with two double units, one number-two pumping outfit, 16 stall cocks, and four pipe clamps. The milking machine arrived on March 22, 1918. This letter, from March 26, is a response from the Empire Cream Separator Company to President Palmer’s request that they send someone to install the machine. The company tells President Palmer that they were sending an expert, Mr. C. W. Hill to set up their milker. They praise Mr. Hill as excellent choice to install the machine, and that he would arrive as soon as he could. They tell President Palmer that another person could come at once, but they there was no one better than Mr. Hill.</text>

<text>This letter to the "Honorable Board of Trustees" from their chosen Executive Committee outlines important factors to the transition of Alabama Technical Institute and College for Women to Alabama College.

The Executive Committe notices some of the following aspects that supported their decision to support said transition:

1. The admission of more college students and less high school applicants
2. It would offer full college courses to the citizens of Montevallo, Alabama
3. The new, well-functioning additions of the library and the on-campus dairy farm

Also mentioned in this report is the request for increase on the President's home which still resides on Flower Hill to this day. The Executive Committee asked for an increase of $16,000 which took the original budget from $9,000 to $25,000 ($133,000 to $369,000 in 2017).</text>

              <elementText elementTextId="8276">
<text>According to this letter by president Palmer to the Alabama governor and the school's board of trustees, the first year of the four-year college was already underway by October 1922 in the home economics major--but all other majors still only offered three-year course studies. This offering of a four-year degree plan helped bring in new college applicants and fewer high school applicants overall, which would eventually lead to the discontinuance of high school courses. The letter then gives an outline of enrollment numbers over the past twelve years which show a reversal in the numbers of high school students versus college students--the high school students outweigh the college students greatly and then start to slowly decline as more college students are gained. The numbers indicate that even without the active discontinuance of the high school courses, there would no longer be enough students to effectively support the program within the next few years. The document also explains that there was not a college curriculum in place in the early years of the program to justify the small numbers.

The letter then laments that many students had decided to withdraw from the institution and go elsewhere before the semester even began, due to "unsettled ratings". Because of this, the letter moves to implement the new full, four-year college and explains that a committe was set in place to determine the worthiness of this cause.

Palmer then apologizes for the lack of a budget sent to the State Budget Commission, due to a new act that he had not been made aware of. Later in this letter, he fixes this issue and submits his budgets.

In the section "Training School" Palmer discloses that teacher training is a primary function of the college/institute as many of the schools in the area are under their supervision. The training school is paid for by the University with a sum of $8,080 or $119,343.54 (all inflation calculations in 2017 dollars) and the State/County/Town/District with a sum of then: $9,681.45 ($142,997.34).

Under the section "Library," Palmer says that the new library is almost completed and should be done by December 1, 1922, though it was supposed to be done by August 9, 1922--the delays were unavoidable.

"Extension Work" discusses giving teachers high school and college credits to encourage them to go back to college (particularly the Alabama Technical Institute and College for Women).

There is a brief recounting of the Montevallo Newsletter.

The letter also discusses the dairy farm's success within the school, revealing that the dining room receives seventy-two gallons of milk a day. Due to the need of a dairy care room, not only was the room built for $1,250 ($18,462.80), but a new course of study in the dairying field was developed. A new shed for storing hay and protecting the cattle was also built for $250 ($3692.56). He goes on to discuss more about how the cattle are beginning to pay for themselves.

President Palmer then gives his recommendations before signing off and also enclosing the salaries, budgets, and various other expense reports to the Budget Commissioner. </text>

<text>On February 9, 1923 a committee gathered to divide funds set aside for the expansion of the Institute’s courses of study into a full fledged Bachelor’s program. Alabama College began session in the fall of 1923. In previous years the Institute had only offered courses of study ranging from one to three years, but those courses were expanding into higher fields of study. Beginning in 1923, all courses of study at the college were instructed on a four year basis according to the Bachelor’s program. Programs offered by the college included the B.A., B.S., and the Bachelor’s of Music. The Bachelor’s program carried general requirements for all students. Student’s courses would contain 192 quarter-credit hours, nearly 60 to 70 credit hours more than the average degree offered by the University of Montevallo, including 12 credit hours in physical education. Students were required to complete two years (four terms) of English, a requirement still in effect today for nearly all, if not every student in attendance today. One will notice that in most of Palmer’s correspondence with the Governor and the Board of Trustees, health is a very important issue and is maintained exceptionally well. Expansion of their music program into a Bachelor’s of Music degree reflects the college’s appreciation for fine arts besides their reputation for their programs for home economics and physical education. The letter outlines the goals of each of the college’s fully-loaded degree programs. At the time of this letter, Alabama was in high demand for teachers and greater literacy. The college began operating a teacher training program to raise the standard of education. Instructors from the Institute would go to Columbiana to train county school teachers who wished to teach higher & secondary education. Malaria and Tuberculosis in Alabama in the early 1910s caused demand for teachers with physical education and first-aid and limited medical training. Besides the college’s new four year Bachelor’s program, the college offered two-year degrees in home economics, music, business, and teaching for pupils who wished to teach elementary or junior high school education. This letter outlines several of the shifts made from the school’s infancy as the Alabama Technical Institute and College for Women to the Alabama College.</text>

<text>In the Fall term of 1921, the Alabama Technical Institute and College for women began offering a four year degree in home economics, the first of its kind in the state. Colleges all around ridiculed the institute because home economics was not on the state's listed curriculum. Soon enough, colleges and high schools began teaching the course to their students. Regarding term length, the institute adopted a four quarter system to allow girls to pursue an education even if they couldn't attend school for more than three or six months at a time. The girls attended class year round in 10-13 week terms. Twenty five years after the opening of the Alabama Technical Institute for College and Women, plans for a new library were submitted in light of President Palmer's urgent desire to cultivate education in Alabama. The library was open for use by September 1922. Also, the letter to the board of trustees outlines several expenses regarding the construction of the president's home. Beside's a report of the school's well being, as well as the well being of the student body, the letter outlines some changes being made to the dairy and farm used by the school. The price of milk was going up for the residents.

It is important to note that this document contains evidence of the institute's desire to grow from a small school into a college that would eventually offer a wide variety of courses as the Alabama College. So many students were coming from all over to attend the institute in the Fall 1921 term that the incoming freshman size was nearly double that of the entire school’s attendance the previous year. This was due to the institute’s new degree program in home economics. In 1922, all students at the college were also required to register for the new four-year degree or a three year degree in another course. The college also announces a new two-year program from students pursuing elementary and higher education to begin the follow year in 1923. These were among President Palmer’s first moves towards transitioning the Alabama Technical Institute and College for Women towards the four-year “Alabama College.”</text>

<text>Alabama College's fall bulletin in 1923 provides many details of the University of Montevallo’s early development. Identified as the “Extension Division Announcement 1923-1924,” it was the college’s first bulletin published under the name “Alabama College.” In light of the college’s success with its teacher training program in Columbiana, AL, where instructors from the college trained several teachers in order for them to teach higher levels of education, Alabama College announced its first ever correspondence courses. Any woman in the state of Alabama could apply to Alabama College and take courses through correspondence. It was the school’s first long-distance learning program. President Palmer saw this as a way to give back to Alabama during a time when Alabama needed its education system to produce admirable scholars and workers. Up to fifty percent of one’s degree could be taken through the correspondence program, a much higher margin than what is required today for transient students and interdisciplinary degrees. To further the prospective success of the program, the extension service will offer Study Centers. These are places where the College would sponsor teachers who occasionally met with their long-distance students in groups in order to produce further studies. Finally, the extension service offered lectures to students in nearly all fields of study offered at Alabama College. Palmer’s transition to Alabama College was a success, though, not complete. President Palmer continued to make developments for Alabama College that eventually laid the foundations of the University of Montevallo.</text>

<text>The small staple bound bulletin, <em>What Alabama College Offers</em>, was distributed throughout the state of Alabama to promote Alabama College. It includes descriptions of the college campus, environment, and avaliable course work in a pocket size format for convenience and easy distribution. On the page pictured, a description of Alabama College's "Health Program" is included; mentioned in this section of the bulletin is the College’s dairy which supplied milk to its dining halls. It states that at the time they had over a hundred registered cattle including both Holstein and Jersey cows. The College dairy operated between 1908 and 1960 before it was converted into housing for faculty.<br /><br /> The above mentioned bulletin was selected for exhibition to highlight the role of publications of its type in the school's history. These publications serve as recruiting mechanisms to sustain and increase enrollment. Within the Milner Archives and Special Collections of the University of Montevallo bulletins of this sort from as far back as the school's founding in 1896 to present day are preserved for academic research as well as for alumni's viewing pleasure.</text>

<text>These are photographs of the Alabama College Dairy's cattle which consisted of both award-winning Holstein and Jersey cows. By the end of the dairy's operation in 1960, the cattle consisted of over a hundred cows. All cows occupying the campus farm were registered and certified for health and safety reasons; this ensured the production of the highest quality milk. Milk yielded by the dairy was specifically produced for the campus' use, however, any surplus milk did not go to waste. All excess inventory was sold to citizens of Montevallo and surrounding areas which provided additional profit for the school's general fund; while this was not the original purpose of the dairy it was an added benefit. In 1908, upon evaluating the school's great expense on supplying milk to the school from outside sources President Palmer and other school officials began to look into the details of establishing their own dairy. It was decided that the most cost-effective way to supply milk was maintaining their own dairy. The true purpose of establishing a dairy underneath the management of the school was multifaceted in that it provided the school with a product in great demand, additional income, and a new environment to create additional course work for their student populace. </text>

<text>This is a certificate notifying the Alabama College that the herd of 96 Holstein cattle, located in Montevallo, AL are tuberculosis free. The certificate was issued by the Bureau of Animal Industry of the United States Department of Agriculture and signed by the Acting State Veterinarian, Bureau Chief, and the Inspector in Charge. Certifications must be renewed every year and could become quite costly when administering the tests to every single cow in the herd. Especially if a cow in the herd reacted to the test, then the university would be faced with the choice of putting down the cow and losing money, or paying for another test that could again prove that the cow in suspect was infected. Once a cow was tested and proved to have tuberculosis then it was not safe for the patrons of the university to consume the milk. In 1935 tuberculosis was still widespread and it was often transmitted in rural areas by livestock. During this time frame is when the university began to realize just how labor intensive, time consuming, and how much of a gamble this dairy could be.</text>

This movement for the change was passed by President Palmer as well as the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees. While this was merely the first record of recommendation that the school be transformed into a college, this notion would eventually pass a few years later and the school would permanently discontinue high school courses, as well as add more major courses in lieu of three year courses that the technical school originally offered. The establishment of the college as a liberal arts and sciences college would later prove to be an excellent decision, as the University of Montevallo is the only public liberal arts college in Alabama as of 2017.</text>

<text>This is a letter to Alabama College regarding the college bringing a herd of cattle to the 1927 State Fair. The Fair was held in Birmingham, AL at the state fairgrounds and was held from September 26th to October 1st. The letter came from the desk of the general manager, J.L. Deuhc, and is said to be followed by a list of premiums for entry and a blank entry form. A letter from F.W. Burns, the Livestock specialist at Auburn prompted the letter sent to Alabama College.

Alabama College making an appearance at the state fair can be seen as a 1920’s marketing tool to increase the visibility of the college. Attending the fair also could be viewed as a way to fundraise by selling milk, other dairy products, and possibly even the cattle. It also could have served as a fun outing for the students and faculty. </text>

<text>A handwritten letter from U.D. Franklin to future president and current business manager E.H. Wills regarding milk cans being returned to the dairy without being cleaned thoroughly. During 1927 tuberculosis was at an all time high, and the first vaccine was developed. The status of the milk cans was a worrisome issue because of the easily spreading of tuberculosis and bacteria in general. If any of the students or faculty was to consume milk from an unclean can then they could possibly contract the disease, which was deadly for humans because of the havoc it wreaks on the lungs. Tuberculosis can be spread by the passing of bodily fluids, like saliva, or it can be airborne from coughing and sneezing. If anyone on the campus would have contracted this disease from unclean milk cans then the dairy most likely would have been shut down, and at this time it was more cost efficient for the university to produce milk on site rather than having it shipped in.</text>

The tuberculosis vaccine was developed in 1927, but still not very wide spread. The cattle tested for tuberculosis were given an injection of a purified type of the disease, then the injection site would be examined 3 days later to see how the cattle reacted to the injection. If the injection site shows any type of reaction that specific cow is suspected of having tuberculosis and is subject to further testing which would confirm or deny the contraction of tuberculosis. If one cow had a reaction to the test then the entire herd would be considered compromised and would not have been cleared to produce milk and other dairy products for the school. In 1930 the herd of cattle owned by the university was certified as tuberculosis free and the cows were cleared to produce milk for the university.</text>

Miss Ford was graduated from our School of the Spoken

instead of the two years, in order to be as well prepared as
possible for teaching; she has a comprehensive grasp of our
met hod, which is practical and scientific and founded on a working
principle. She knows how to interest her classes at once and
to obtain satisfactory results.
Personally Miss Ford is a young woman of the finest
character and breeding. She is trustworthy and loyal and is an
enthusiast in her profession. Miss Ford is also an excellent

<text>The Leland Powers School of the Spoken Word sends a letter of recommendation to Dr. Palmer on behalf of Olivia Ford, a recent graduate seeking employment as a teacher. Miss Ford sent a handwritten letter to Dr. Palmer on June 10, 1920 inquiring about a job, outlining her credentials, and stated that she is friends with two graduates of Alabama Girls’ Technical Institute.
On June 12, 1920, Dr. Palmer responded to Miss Ford stating that no positions were available. He thanked her for writing and said that it is always nice to hear that others have gotten to know graduates of the school.
Miss Ford sent a 2nd letter to Dr. Palmer on September 17, 1920, stating that the Interstate Teachers Agency notified her of a job vacancy for Teacher of English and Expression. In the letter she enclosed a photograph and said she would have a letter from Leland Powers School recommending her for the position. She asked that Dr. Palmer consider her letter as a formal application for the job.

The letter is written by a building coordinator pleading with the board of trustees of Alabama College to build a new dairy and advising them on other building projects.

The letter states exactly how much it would cost to repair the current dairy. The building coordinator starts by asking Alabama College to build a new dairy instead of making the repairs. At this time, the dairy was growing quickly. The building coordinator also states that if the cows stayed in the present location, it would be impossible to erect the new dormitory. Lastly, the letter states that were the cows moved from their current field, that field could be used as an athletic field.</text>

<text>This letter states that the season for taking squirrels closed on February 1st and it would not begin again until the following fall. The letter was written by I. T. Quinn commissioner of the Alabama State Department of Game and Fisheries in Montgomery. The reason for the letter was that he had been getting reports of students and professors trapping squirrels right outside of Montevallo's city limits in order to bring them back to campus.

The residents of Alabama College wanted the squirrels on campus because they were tired of so many acorns on the red bricks. The bricks were already hard enough to walk on. The students and professors' efforts were successful as Alabama College had a healthy population by the 1940s. Current students can certainly attest to the fact that the campus features an abundant population of squirrels.</text>

After milking the cows were let out into the pasture to graze and walk around. The dairy was operated by university staff and students. It was used as a teaching tool for students to learn about farming and the cattle. The Alabama College supplied its students with milk, butter, and even ice cream from the dairy. It was also a source of income for the school. Surplus milk could be sold to Montevallo locals. This is picture was taken inside of the Alabama College milking facility in the mid-1930s. </text>
