There are no known images of Condie Cunningham, but many believe that one of the young women pictured is Miss Cunningham. Interestingly enough they did not start labeling the student’s pictures with their names until the following year in 1909. In Main Hall students would often gather around a chafing dish to make hot chocolate and talk. When the call was made for lights out someone blew the flame towards a bottle of alcohol which ignited and caught Miss Cunningham’s nightdress on fire. Students tried to wrap Miss Cunningham in a rug, but she began to run. By the time the flames were extinguished, she had been severely burned. Miss Cunningham suffered serve burns and was treated at the school. She died on February 6, 1908, 48 hours after the incident. Since 1909 students have said that Condie's ghost haunts Main Hall. Students speak of a ghost covered in flames. Others report hearing her in the shower screaming. Some sororities have made it part of their initiation to spend the night in the hall where Miss Cunningham was running when she caught fire. As captivating as the ghost story is and a part of the University’s history, the tragic accident gave President Palmer the leverage to make some much needed improvements to the Main Hall at the school. Trumbauer: The College Night Ghost Description An account of the resource Like many other buildings on the University of Montevallo's campus, Palmer Hall is said to be inhabited by a ghost. The ghost in question would be that of Dr. William H. Trumbauer, an ardent supporter of the school's theater department and one of the chief designers of Palmer Hall. Trumbauer's spirit is said to linger in Palmer Hall due to his lasting bitterness that his name was left off of the building's cornerstone, despite his instrumental role in its design and construction. Trumbauer's ghost (or "Trummy," as he is affectionately referred to on campus) is reportedly quite whimsical in his hauntings, sometimes seeing fit to visit the backstage of Palmer Hall during preparations for perfomances. His most notable exploit is said to be during the final dress rehearsal for College Night, where he will swing wooden battens over the stage (pictured), stopping them over the side (Purple or Gold) whose performance he most enjoyed. That side will supposedly win College Night. Due to Trumbauer's fervent support of the arts and his reputation as a perfectionist in life, as well as his relatively amicable nature in death, his existence as a ghost is widely accepted, and his approval of a performance is taken quite seriously. The building was one of two constructed in 1851 for the Montevallo Male Insitute. Not long after their construction, Reynolds Hall became known as the Female Academy and the other building as the Male Academy. These “Academies” were founded by two Presbyterian ministers, Dr. Gardner and Dr. Roach with the financial support of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and the surrounding towns-people. The Academies soon closed due to financial strain resulting from the pre-war tension and start of the Civil War. Documents report that the Male Academy was soon sold off as a place of residence to Judge Lyman family. With the war sweeping across the South, Reynolds Hall would soon become a historical landmark for the city of Montevallo. As Union forces neared the small town, townsmen collected in front of Reynolds to volunteer and gather Confederate troops for the oncoming battle. As one of the oldest buildings on campus with such a divided history, it is no wonder Reynolds Hall developed its own ghost story. From the very start of Alabama College, Reynolds Hall was affectionately known as The Chapel. Until Bloch Hall was constructed in 1915, The Chapel was the only building owned by Alabama College that was not used for housing. The girls went there for all their administrative needs, classes, and assemblies, including, of course, chapel. In 1925 The Chapel was finally given the official name of Reynolds Hall in honor of Alabama College’s first president, Henry Reynolds. As well as being the school’s founder, Reynolds had another reported tie with the building. Reynolds supposedly took charge of the hall during the Civil War, giving a foothold for the ghost story students excitedly passed around, and still pass to this day, in mere whispers. By this time in the school’s history, the ghost story surrounding Reynolds Hall had begun taking a more firm shape. According to report and rumor, President Reynolds was a colonel in the Confederate Army and had in fact been given charge of the Hall which had begun functioning as a hospital for wounded soldiers. Reynolds could not help but respond to the call when Sherman’s Troop attacked the Briarfield Iron Works a short distance away. The story goes that by the time Reynolds got back to Montevallo, the hall that would eventually bear his name had been attacked and the wounded soldiers taking refuge there massacred. It was then Reynolds, feeling the weight of guilt having left the hall, vowed to never leave again. To this day there are reports of hauntings in Reynolds Hall from various students and late night maintenance workers, including a portrait of Reynolds himself moving around the building without being touched. This graveyard is located just behind Hill House and near Harmon Hall. The cemetery houses Edmund King and his family. The tall white obelisk headstone is that of Edmund King's. It is also believed that Edmund King's wife was buried here although there is no visible tombstone or marker eyewitness accounts tell of Mr. King going to this plot and just staring at the ground crying. When the curfew signal sounded, the young ladies began to clean up their items. In their rush, the container of alcohol that worked as fuel for the burner spilled over and onto Cunningham’s nightgown. Her nightgown then caught fire which caused her to panic. In an attempt to put out the fire, her roommate threw a rug on her but it was to no avail. Two days later on February 6th, Cunningham died in a hospital from her injuries. In the years following Cunningham’s death, strange phenomena followed. Supposedly a face surrounded by flames appeared in the wood grain of her dorm room’s door. It is said to have reappeared in a subsequent door on Main Hall. This, coupled with accounts of hearing a woman running through the halls at night and screaming in the bathrooms, made residents of the room uncomfortable. Eventually the door was removed and the room sealed off. The last door is kept in storage at the University of Montevallo archives, but it is put on display in the library during the month of October for the spirit of Halloween. Until her death in 2011, she actively cultivated the campus’s reputation for ghosts. In fact, she welcomed a number of paranormal societies from as far away as California and Colorado to come visit the campus and take readings with their instruments. Shackelford had her own curious experiences while supervising the paranormal investigators on campus. She claimed to have witnessed unusual things herself such as the temperature dropping in King House from the 60s to the 40s in a matter of seconds – a sure sign of spirits – as well as furniture moving.
