Text Any textual data included in the document A FAITHFUL HORSE Old Proctor Passes Away at a Ripe Age On Saturday, August 11th, 1917, this noted old horse, belonging to Dr. T. W. Palmer, passed away. Every Citizen of Montevallo knew old Proctor, and there were many expressions of regret when it was learned that he was dead "How long have you owned Proctor," asked the Advertiser man of Dr. Palmer. "I Bought him September 1st, 1892, from a drove in Tuscaloosa. Has he lived three weeks longer he would have been in my possession just twenty-five years. He was supposed to be seven years old when I bought him ; so he was probably thirty-two years of age." "Your family will probably miss him." "Yes, he was truly a member of the family. When young he was one of the best saddle and buggy horses in the State. We often drove him twenty-five or thirty miles in one day, hitched to a surrey with four grown people in it, -sometimes with two adults and six or seven children. He has pulled the surrey, with four or five adults, to Calera in forty-five or fifty minutes, when the roads were worse than they are now. he was well known to thousands of young men and women over this country. During the past twelve months I have had inquiries concerning him from eight different states and from nearly every county in this State. "A good and true story is told about him concerning the last appropriation to the A.G.T.I. Six years ago, when the appropriation bill was before the legislature, all such bills were postponed in the House until the last day when such matters could be taken up. Each member was allowed to call only one bill. The representative in charge of the A.G.T.I. measure has called up another bill and, therefore, could not bring up ours. Every other member, it seems, had a bill to bring up and would not give way for us. There was no opposition to our bill; we simply had to get a man who would agree to call it up. Eleven o'clock had come and midnight was fast approaching. The legislature would then adjoun, and our chance would be forever lost. You can imagine my desperation. Finally, a friend said to me, 'I think I know a man whom I can get to call your bill.' 'Get him at once,' said I. When that legislator's ear was gotten he could not recall me, at first, and did not want to call a bill unless he knew something of the people back of it. Explanations were quickly made by my friend that it was for the A.G.T.I., and that I had one lived in Tuscaloosa, etc, etc. Finally, the honorable representative said: 'O yes I recall him; I visited Tuscaloosa once to see my sick boy, and this fellow took me to ride behind old Proctor. I will call the bill up-not for Paler's sake- but for the sake of old Proctor.' Bloch hall and the new Music Building are the results of that act. Old Proctor was thus a genuine benefactor to the A.G.T.I., for the good impression that he made upon a stranger enabled us to procure, at the critical moment, the money used in the construction of two of our best buildings. Peace to the faithful old animal !" It is creditable to Dr.Palmer that Proctor made such a good impression and lived to a good old age. This document, commemorating the death of Dr. Palmer's horse of twenty five years, Old Proctor, also allows for a short insight into the funding decisions of the Alabama Girl's Technical Institute, or A.G.T.I. during the early years of his administration. The short article goes into the small details of Old Proctor's life, including details of trips he had been a part of in the past. It also allows us to see President Palmer as more than just a figure of repute, and as a simple southerner like the majority of the graduates of Montevallo. Though the man would likely not agree wholly with the way in which our University has progressed, he set the foundations for a four year liberal arts institute, and without this work we would not be where we are today. This “illumination machine” boasted multiple times that it used the best gas for lighting. Its use of Acetylene gas was to have the best reproduction of sunlight while remaining efficient in terms of cost. Though the burning of the gas did not asphyxiate the people around them, it did make them nauseous. With housing for the burning gas being a carbide like granite, fear of explosion or fire was nearly non-existent. It was also better than its competitors because it used one fifteenth the amount of gas as the normal gas burners. The company gave a list of products with their price tags ranging from $70 to $300 ($1960.77 to $8403.28 in today’s market). Whether or not President Peterson purchased these items is unknown. This company sent a brochure to Peterson of the items that they sold. Toilets. Ahrens and Ott began back in 1865 as a plumbing and pipe fitting company. The company merged with Dawes and Myler Manufacturing Company and seven others in 1899 and became the Standard Sanitary Manufacturing Company. In the brochure, toilets ranged from prices in the low $20s to high $80s. Two of which were priced at $42 and $39. These prices by today’s standards would be $1176.46 and $1092.43. Whether or not if President Peterson purchased these toilets is unknown. Although classes offered in the early 1900s reflected what society deemed appropriate and useful at the time, the promotion of higher education for women is one proud heritage for the University of Montevallo. What a wonderful time to be at the Alabama Girls Industrial School. The school tuition was only $94.55. What a bargain! Well, not exactly. This was a little while ago, 1900. The same money would be about $2,648.43 in today’s dollars, but back then the girls also received classes for free such as elocution, scientific cooking, and dressmaking. Things changed significantly in 1903. The fee was now lowered to $92. That price is now about $2,387.18, but freehand drawing and sight singing were now free classes too. Montevallo would be hard pressed to get the student body to sign up for these classes in modern times, even if they were free. This letter is a response by a parent having been notified of a smallpox outbreak at the school. This was not the first outbreak that happened at the school. The letter reveals the trust placed in Dr. Peterson, the President of the school. There are many letters by parents in response to being notified of smallpox at the school just like this one. Each letter proclaims the ability of Dr. Peterson to be responsible for the safety of the students, and being loved for his actions. The school, then called the Alabama Girls Industrial School, required students to remain on campus unless they had the schools permission to leave. The above letter, drafted by the parents of a student, requests Dr. Peterson, the President of the school, to allow their daughter to come home for the “Christmas holidays.” The protection of the girls attending the university was the responsibility of the school in 1904. Dr. Peterson was charged with the welfare of the girls while they were away from home attending school, and he was looked upon like a father figure by the students and parents. Dr. Wilkerson served the Alabama Girls Industrial School from 1899 to 1915. It was during this time in 1904 that the university had a smallpox outbreak during the fall session of school. The infirmary where Dr. Wilkerson worked is now called Peterson Hall on the University of Montevallo campus. It is unknown how many of the students were treated for small pox, but there is a letter from a father of a student dated November 24th 1904 requesting the vaccination his daughters. The vast majority of the correspondence from families to the university during the smallpox outbreak requests that the students stay at school. The belief is that the students would be under the very best medical care while attending the university. Having previously served as a Dean and Professor of Mathematics at the University of Alabama, he became president of the University of Montevallo (then known as the Alabama Girls' Industrial School) in 1907. He served almost 19 years as president -- the longest tenure of any president in the school's history -- until his death in 1926. As president, Palmer was instrumental in the expansion of the school's facilities. He became president when the school was frequently overcrowded, so during his tenure, he oversaw the construction of many new buildings. These new buildings included Bloch Hall (the first building dedicated entirely to academics), Ramsay Hall, the president's house at Flower Hill (after the original president's home had burnt down in 1921), the Tower (which served as the school's main water supply until 1962), a dairy, and, of course, Palmer Hall. Palmer also purchased King House, one of the oldest buildings in Montevallo, for the school. Palmer also greatly expanded the school's academic focus. In 1911, the Alabama Girls' Industrial School was renamed to the Alabama Girls' Technical Institute, with the phrase "and College for Women" later added in 1919, due to the addition of liberal arts courses to the curriculum. In 1923, the school was renamed yet again to Alabama College, State College for Women. This signaled a shift from the previous focus on technical training and high-school level education, to a degree-granting, college level institution - a shift that was cemented when Palmer got the schools accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools in 1925. A businessman and town notable, Reynolds lobbied for the state to build a school for girls in Montevallo. When the state agreed, Reynolds moved quickly to hire faculty, recruit students, and prepare for inaugural classes in 1896. Reynolds was born in Tennessee. His family came to Alabama in the 1840s where they ran a stage coach business. During the Civil War (1861-1865) Reynolds entered the Confederate army as a private but left it a lieutenant. He carried out dangerous missions behind enemy lines and after the war locals gave him the honorary title captain. Reynolds Hall is named for him. During Reynolds' three years as president, he acquired 25,000 acres of public land from Congress and built the first residential wing of Main Hall. The Board of Trustees forced him to resign in 1899 due to questions about his management of public funds. Nonetheless, the school was on a solid footing after his tenure as president. In March, because of the tragic accident with Condie Cunningham, this time when President Palmer asked for a water tower he got it. He also wanted fire escapes for Main Hall. He believed that the building was inadequately equipped in case of a fire. This time his request did not fall on deaf ears. The water tower and fire escape were added in late 1908. He also saw to it an infirmary was added to the campus. Up until that point, the sick were cared for in the same building. Therefore, it was hard to contain contagious diseases. So adding another building to care for the sick was very important to President Palmer. The city of Montevallo received rail shipments of naturally harvested ice from northern firms through the port of Mobile, but an increasing number of industrial ice plants emerged across the American south during the first decade of the twentieth century. Cincinnati's Triumph Ice Machine Company hoped A.G.I.S. President Francis Peterson would purchase equipment for ice production in 1901. By 1913 the Montevallo Ice & Light Company announced plans to build a 10-ton ice making plant with machinery from York Manufacturing Company in Pennsylvania. At the time of the announcement commercially produced ice was about to overtake the volume of naturally harvested ice in the United States.
