The building went through renovations in 1968 and was replaced as the school's library in 1969 with.the opening of Carmichael Library. Today it houses the College of Education although testaments to the old library remain. The words "Knowledge is Power" still adorn the top of the building. The building was named after a Edward Houston Wills who was business manager for the university from 1929 till 1946. The House was built by slaves who took clay from a nearby river to build the bricks and glass windows were imported to add to the effect of grandeur. The glass windows were the first to be seen is this part of the town and where a symbol of prosperity to the King family. The King house has been used for many different purposes since 1823 such as a classroom, a summer dorm and office buildings. Today the house is as much as a symbol as well as a usable home. Erected in 1910, the Tower provided the Alabama Girls' Industrial School, the name by which the University of Montevallo was then known, with a steady supply of water. Centrally-located and capable of holding up to 100,000 gallons of water, the Tower's water tank allowed access to clean water for both the campus and the community of Montevallo. In 1942, the year in which this photograph appeared in the <em>Montage</em>, the Tower held Alabama College's water supply and was the site of the school's fire siren. The Tower continued to serve as the school's water supply until 1962. Since that time, the Tower has served a number of functions for Alabama College, and later, the University of Montevallo. Over one hundred years after its construction, the Tower is now the home of the University of Montevallo's Environmental Studies Program and the Office of Sustainability Initiatives. Since 1932, Montevallo's student literary publication, <em>The Tower</em>, has been named after this famous structure. Prior to the construction of Flowerhill, the presidents of the Alabama Girls' Industrial School and the Alabama Girls' Technical Institute, two of Montevallo's predecessor institutions, lived in a number of different homes, both on campus and in the community. In the years just prior to Flowerhill's construction, the presidential home was located near where Palmer Hall stands today. Unfortunately, this structure was destroyed by fire in 1921, necessitating the construction of a new home. In the interim period, President Palmer and his family resided in the school's infirmary, which was then located near Main Hall. Although Flowerhill was constructed during the presidency of Dr. Palmer and designed by his wife, Dr. Palmer never actually lived in Flowerhill, as he died in the year of its completion. While the home has undergone some renovations in the intervening decades, Flowerhill has maintained much of its original appearance and architectural character. Today, Flowerhill is known for its expansive lawn, beautiful gardens, and its charming, red bricked walls. The president's home is the site of numerous events throughout the year, including the president's annual Christmas gathering and other formal events. Spring graduation, the university's largest commencement ceremony, is held on Flowerhill's lawn each May. Jeter hall was built in 1915 as an elementary school. It contained six classrooms, an auditorium, a music room, two storage rooms, a cafeteria, and one toilet. It functioned as a Education Laboratory School for students of Montevallo. Future teachers could practice their skills while observing qualified instructors. During the 1930's, lower elementary grades were housed in this building. This consists of kindergarten, first, and second grade students. By 1965, the building no longer served the needs of the community. Renovated with college labor, the building transformed into the social sciences building, adding classrooms and private offices for instructors. First social science classes were held February 5, 1965. During the 1940s, Alabama College, the state college for women, was a four-year degree-granting institution for women. Wills Hall was built in May 1921 after a number of Montevallo women formed literary clubs. The Alabama Federation of Women's Clubs supplied books. Prior to the building opening, books had been stored in random places including the baptist pastor's office to the "fun room" in the women's dorm. The building featured a 90-foot long reading room with arched Palladian windows. During the 1940's, as seen in the first photograph, more stacks were added, doubling the size of the building. Wills was renovated in 1968 to become the home of the College of Education. The new additions included air conditioning, new carpet, and an elevator. Wills was further renovated in 1975 to accommodate the growing College of Education, as it remains today. This is the same firm that designed the Biltmore House grounds in Asheville North Carolina as well as Central Park in New York City. Among the firms recommendations were a tree lined drive to the president’s Flowerhill residence and red brick streets to unify the whole. The impetus for this change came from the Olmsted Brothers, a landscape architect firm, that recommended brick streets in 1930 as a way to unify the entire campus. Construction began in the 1930s under the aegis of the federally funded Works Progress Administration (WPA). This photographic collage from the student yearbook in 1935 shows workers paving streets and laying the now iconic red brick sidewalks. It houses several of the University of Montevallo's administrative offices, most notably the registrar's office, and is also home to the Palmer Auditorium. The 1,200-seat Auditorium serves most notably as a stage for the famous Homecoming tradition of College Night, which has been hosted there since 1930. The auditorium also plays host to celebrations and events concerning Founders' Day, Honors Day, and Fall Commencement. In 1979, Palmer Hall underwent extensive renovation, after falling into a state of disrepair over the fifty years since its initial construction. In addition to the refitting of the auditorium's seats and the restoration of the stage and orchestra pit, this renovation also saw the installation of a large, intricately-designed Holtkamp pipe organ in the auditorium. Title A name given to the resource Peterson Hall Date A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource 1913-1914 Description An account of the resource Peterson Hall, originally built as an infirmary, was named for the university’s second president, Dr. Francis Marion Peterson. Construction for the building began in May 1913, and it was ready to house patients less than a year later in April 1914. Previously, injured or ill students were housed on the second floor of Main Hall, and later in Nabors Hall, which is now called King House. Peterson Hall is two stories tall, with two-story porches in the front and rear of the building. Up through 1987, it housed the Health and Counseling Centers. After renovations it was reopened in 2014 as a part of the Art Department. Title A name given to the resource Becoming Sculpture Date A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource 2015 Creator An entity primarily responsible for making the resource Betsy Schmidt Description An account of the resource The Becoming Sculpture was created by Ted Metz, a University of Montevallo art professor. The sculpture, 16 feet tall and made of bronze, was unveiled on February 15, 2003. The pedestal underneath the sculpture is made of limestone and red bricks. The sculpture depicts two hands: a young hand representing university students reaching out toward the future, and an older hand representing the university itself guiding the student to that future. The separation between the hands represents the student’s graduation. The older hand was modeled after Metz’s own hand, while the younger hand was modeled after one of his students’ hands. The sculpture was created on campus by about 40 university students under the direction of Metz and took 22 months to complete. Approximately 90 individual molds were cast using 5000 pounds of bronze. The sculpture stands near Main Hall and Wills Hall. Title A name given to the resource Squirrels on Campus Date A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource April 28, 1927 Creator An entity primarily responsible for making the resource The Alabama Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Description An account of the resource This letter states that the season for taking squirrels closed on February 1st and it would not begin again until the following fall. The letter was written by I. T. Quinn commissioner of the Alabama State Department of Game and Fisheries in Montgomery. The reason for the letter was that he had been getting reports of students and professors trapping squirrels right outside of Montevallo's city limits in order to bring them back to campus. The residents of Alabama College wanted the squirrels on campus because they were tired of so many acorns on the red bricks. The bricks were already hard enough to walk on. The students and professors' efforts were successful as Alabama College had a healthy population by the 1940s. Current students can certainly attest to the fact that the campus features an abundant population of squirrels.
