Description

In 1934, the same year Professor Steelman departed for Washington DC, the school yearbook wrote about his role as advisor to the senior class: “he has so loyally filled this position that he has earned a love and admiration equaled by few. His quick smile, his cheery greeting, and his sympathetic understanding has endeared him to the class as a whole. His boyish enthusiasm, his collegiate spirit, and his interest in us as individuals have made him not only a respected advisor but a genuine friend. Through the force of his own personality, he has projected himself into the progressive spirit of our student activities and organizations.” John R. Steelman clearly made an impact at Alabama College. Remarkably, he would become one of the most influential men in the United States government within ten years.
