Description

This is a certificate notifying the Alabama College that the herd of 96 Holstein cattle, located in Montevallo, AL are tuberculosis free. The certificate was issued by the Bureau of Animal Industry of the United States Department of Agriculture and signed by the Acting State Veterinarian, Bureau Chief, and the Inspector in Charge. Certifications must be renewed every year and could become quite costly when administering the tests to every single cow in the herd. Especially if a cow in the herd reacted to the test, then the university would be faced with the choice of putting down the cow and losing money, or paying for another test that could again prove that the cow in suspect was infected. Once a cow was tested and proved to have tuberculosis then it was not safe for the patrons of the university to consume the milk. In 1935 tuberculosis was still widespread and it was often transmitted in rural areas by livestock. During this time frame is when the university began to realize just how labor intensive, time consuming, and how much of a gamble this dairy could be.
